I think I'm going to have to stop reading the Guardian since time and time again they seem to be more anti-porn than any other newspaper. Today we have Martin Kettle ranting about internet porn http://bit.ly/kMawmq with phrases like "It is beyond serious dispute that the internet has placed much greater amounts of pornography within far easier reach of many more people, including children, than at any other time in human history. And it is inconceivable that this is a development without destructive consequences." Then we have the intemperate rants of Gail Dines and others expressing the view that enthusiasm for shaving the public hair or wearing high heels is a sign of decadence and all the fault of the porn industry. "The cumulative effect is what the journalist Pamela Paul calls the "pornification" of our culture, wherein porn images, messages and stories seep into our sexual identities and relationships. This trend can be seen in the ever-higher heels that are now popular with women, the hypersexed look of younger and younger girls, celebrities such as Miley Cyrus pole dancing, and – in what is probably the most blatant example to date – the popularity of genital waxing among young women." - see http://bit.ly/gFmq70 Thank goodness for Guardian columnist Pamela Stephenson Connolly, who advises a 22 year old who states "Deviant sex intrigues me": "If your porn-viewing habit is seriously affecting your ability to function at work or in your life generally, or if it's likely to get you into trouble, seek therapy to stop. But if you're simply being drawn to an unusual sexual style, be more accepting of your erotic journey."

The Groinad and other papers - especially the tabloids - are known for pandering to reader prejudices. This, given the parlous state of the Forth Estate, is unfortunately their best shot at survival. The Groinad and the Observer are aimed at that mythical beast, the intellectual socialist. This is apparently the same beast behind the Frankfurt School, a group of hi-fallutin Marxists who, from the 1920s, sought ways of sowing the same seeds in western Europe as had brought about the destruction of Tsarist Russia in favour of Soviet Communism. Ergo, we can probably safely indicate a leaning towards the very same fascist ideology, which frowns on individual freedoms in favour of state control. Heavy subject; sorry to get political on you but, well, you did ask... Holmes: Meretricious

The left are dull and the right are fun. Same with the old Protestants, Oliver Cromwell lot v the Royalists and Catholics. We're much more fun.

I have often believed the opposite of right is wrong. Unless you're left-handed, of course; what's wrong with that? Holmes: Meretricious

I have always felt the Guardian to be the paper of the left wing who can read and write properly...... those who feel a need to protect the working class against itself but are as working class as say the 2nd Viscount Stansgate. They seem to manage to concoct an unpalatable soup of patronizing puritanism in an effort to control the baser instincts of those they consider too thick to know what is good for them....such as owning their council houses. As for porn one would not want to label the anti porn writers as parsimonious frigid busybodies control freaks but I suppose the ancient regime has to shelter somewhere.

find me photos of them, when I next drive past their offices, if I see them on their bikes, I'll be sure to hit them. Less cyclists and less Grauniad journalists = better place.

I havent read asll the articles, neither do I read the Guardian (Independent girl me) but they raise SOME relevant points. Please dont jump on me - some of it is rubbish BUT not all of it. there is no doubt that the internet has made porn more available to children for example, and shaving or hollywood waxes certainly seem to have become more popular with the rise of porn. I'm sorry if my profile pic offends but...TOUGH

The anti-porn thing is mostly the only thing apart from the rampant typos that I actually see wrong with it. And I assume the anti-porn stance comes from some stupid radical feminism thing. Surprised to see so many people jump on it though. It's not the greatest newspaper, but it's hardly the Daily Mail, Express etc. In fact, there are not enough papers that take a left-wing view. The fact the Guardian and Independent are the 'best' the press have to offer is testament to that..... Edited 27 May 11, 8:23 PM by CaptainQuo |
