Learning how to make furniture.

I was wondering if any one on here knows any were to learn how to make furniture of all types I have been looking and all the ones I can find are half a country away.

I was looking for some were in London or Surrey falling that does any one actual do this for a living and need an aprentice ?

This is a serious question and I would like serious answers please. I thank you in advance for any help in this endeavor.

Al :-)

P.S. I don't know if this is the rite place to post this.

Have you tried your local Colleges?

Try searching for cabinet making courses. That would be the best introduction, but very few colleges run them. It would also take a couple of years too. Also you could try just a woodworking course.....

Thanks, Yes I have looked at the local collages and if you want to bag two peices of 2"x4" together then there are lodes. I did not think to look at cabinet making and will do strate away.

Thanks.

Have a look at this site, http://www.saroftreve.com/workshop/index.htm

I haven't seen any updates for a while, but it's still worth a look.

I was a carpenter and joiner,"cabinet maker" standard...... Though I cant do it these days due to my weak limbs, I still have all that I have learned in my 35 year career still in my mind....... My Son has learned a lot from what I have shown him over several years.

What I am trying to say is,- Good quality carpentry isn't normally something that can be put into practice by a complete novice in just a few weeks or even months, so do be realistic and patient with your self, ..Regards, ..Dominneed.

I am not sure what kind of course you are looking for but you could try

Kingston University

http://www.ucreative.ac.uk/ba-product-design

London Met offer foundation degrees/BA/MA/short courses

http://searchweb.londonmet.ac.uk/search/search.c...

University of the creative arts has one too

If you go on http://www.ucas.com/

and type furniture into the course search it will tell you what's available country wide in terms of university courses

Hope this is useful

I was going to make the same recommendation.

Lots of fairly simple designs, quite a few things can be made using only vary basic skills and tools.

If you've never done any woodworking before then it might be worth experimenting with a scale model or something...but the St Andrews Cross for example is pretty simple to make.

A sideways look at this...

Mr Hyde, I bet you've got some skills, you must be able to do some stuff. Even if it's just bein able to scew a cup hook in to a breakfast bar stool and thus makin a basic spankin stool.

Sooo how can you utilise these skills to make stuff ? Who knows ta might come up wit some wonderful original stuff,if you approach it from a diffrent angle. To have something unique to you, like nothin else around that peps. really like.
