My wife and I have scheduled a play date tomorrow where pretty much I control where we go with it. I want to explore wax play for the first time. I understand that hieght of the drip is a big deal but what about the colour of the wax? We have plenty of tea lights to play with but we also have some kick ass black altar candles that would make the resulting photos kind of cool. Anyone used black before? Thanks for any heads up. Colour is not generally indicative of temperature. As far as I am aware black only serves as a visual aide, like red.
You can get wax play candles that have the potential to reach higher temperatures without burning.
But normal candles are perfectly painful too!
Start slowly, dripping small drops and then a big drizzle... Enjoy! Edited to say you could always test the temperature on your forearm first... but then again.... I have never come across a candle wax that has actually burned... ignore me! Edited 22 May 11, 6:52 PM by Libertines_girl

Different dyes in the wax and its composition can all have an effect on the temperature of the molten wax. If you aren't sure how suitable a candle is, drop the wax from really high to start with, and slowly lower the candle to find the right height. "We're all living in a freakshow Man, it's called life. My understanding is that the post prior to yours is correct. That's what I have read, at least. ~ It is always by way of pain one arrives at pleasure ~

They are actually both correct (nor do they contradict each other) Ever wondered who the devil comes to for ideas ?

The important factor is the temperature the candle burns at. The colour would have some effect but almost nothing compared to what the candle is made from. As Libertines_girl says you can get special candles that can burn hotter or cooler depending on what you want. High is probably the most important thing you can play with. As Der_Morgenstern says start high and work your way down to the hight that works. Then you can just enjoy yourself and see what you can do :D It would be a good idea to test is first. It's easy to drip it on someone else, but get it wrong and they might never want to do it again. It can scold, but its unlikely to actually burn but probably best you check first.

Having a relative work at the local candle factory, I decided to ask him about this, much of it depends on if the candle is coloured all the way through, how long the candle is designed to burn for, if it is scented and whether the candle is designed to have no drips. There are a lot of permutations.

My recommendation would be to put a good layer of "tea light" or similar basic white on the subject first from a good height and then after building a good layer up, lay the different colours on top - the lower layers of wax will dissipate the heat as the layers build up, so that the subject doesnt get burned if it turns out the candle characteristics are significantly different

Oh, and as an additional tip, I usually light about 30 or 40 tea lights in advance and put them in a large frying pan or wok so that I can just grab the next and carry on when things get going

Don't forget you are going to need something to get the wax off again. My recommendation is a nice flogger |
