One thing that has been mentioned is human rights, and how the death penalty is inhumane. I am going to go against the grain and think that the death penalty should stay in America and in some cases be brought back to the UK. Why? you say we live in a civilised society far from it, Just look around you, in what type of civilised society is a dead baby dumped in a bin only to be discovered by some small chance at a waste disposal site. For every crime or stabbing that is put in the papers you can beath that there are a whole load more that arnt. A civilised society should be one of acceptance of all people this anit. Human rights why should a criminal have the right to take away somebody elses rights. The death penalty should be there to act as a deterrant prison should be there as a deterrant to crime. It simply isnt. It should speak volumes in itself that people are willing to commit a crime when they know they could face the death penalty

Yes I agree with you. There has to be some deterrent against committing a capital offence. You can't rehabilitate a paedophile because they don't see what they are doing as wrong. They are released into the community time and again to reoffend and destroy lives. The families of murdered victims lives are never the same. If justice cannot be seen to be done then people will begin to take the law into their own hands.

There are no capital crimes on the statute books for the UK, or any of it's overseas territories. The problem with capital punishment is that if you convict the wrong person there is no way to make amends once the sentence has been carried out. I was abused by my grandfather, sometimes I wonder if the hysteria around child abuse actually does some harm as well. Unfortunately we have already seen what happens when a newspaper takes it upon themselves to out paedophiles, the mob mentality leads to paediatric staff being attacked. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2000/aug/30/childpr...

I am aware we have no capital offences I don't think that abuse cases are hyped up. I have been a family lawyer for many years and dealt with cases of severe abuse. I have also dealt first hand with paedos. The things I have seen and heard give me nightmares ! So for certain offences yes we need capital punishment and yes I would do it.

What about the people that are innocent, but still receive the lethal injection? Is that civilised? Is that humane? There is no substantial evidence that states with the death penalty have any less crime than states without. If the death penalty was a detterent wouldn't that mean that there would be no murders committed in that state! Violence causes more violence in a society. The death penalty condones homicide. Nice things come in small packages...but so does poison!

It's lack of justice. Some innocent life has been taken is it right that the perpetrator be allowed life? Albeit in prison they still have life. The victim does not. Prison does not rehabilitate - majority of risk era released go on to reoffend. So prison is not a deterrent either is it?

There are capital offences in some of our overseas territories, these being Trinidad and Tobago and St. Kitts. Nice things come in small packages...but so does poison!

Our judicial system is far from being perfect; my husband has had many miscarriage's of justice cases. It is true that prison does not always do the job it is mean't to do and no it is also not a deterrent; mainly. Regarding pheodophiles, maybe chemical castration would be the answer? Chemical castration is an option but they would use implement! I dealt with a case of penetration through vagina and out of stomach with an implement.

I am not going to go into any of the other cases Lib has had, and has now as he is a criminal solicitor and there are too many horrible stories, but wouldn't castration stop testestrone being produced and therefore elementing any sexual urges? In cats a castrated tom becomes much less aggressive. Nice things come in small packages...but so does poison! |
