After reading this post on the thread about the Pro Domme/Teacher outing by the Daily Fail, i was at first really mad that someone would have such a closed minded attitude to sexuality, not only in this day and age, but also on a site dedicated to alternative sexualities.

However, it did get me wondering if there are some jobs where keeping your private life more private than others is not only essential or a good idea (to protect yourself) but also the 'proper' thing to do.

I'm not saying i think teachers, police, nhs workers, etc shouldn't have a sex life. NO WAY AM I SAYING THAT. I am also not saying this teacher should have been outed or printed in the paper. NO WAY AM I SAYING THAT EITHER.

What i am asking (as in, i'm not sure what i think about it, i'd like opinions) is whether you think having a face pic up and being a prison officer is the 'right' thing to do? Or going to school uniform fetish nights and being a teacher? Or... [insert other over polemical kink/sexuality activity and matching potentially risqué job].

I think its a real shame that BDSM/ lifestyle cant be openly expressed without the fear of loosing your job etc.

I think if it was more accepted by others, there would be more people who would want to participate in more of what it has to offer etc.

Face pictures is a tricky one, some its down to confidence, but others who have jobs that they know if they get spotted they are out of the job, its hard to live with, but also need to be ultra carefull with what they do.

Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.

I think my kink makes me a more well balanced, accepting, non judgemental person. However, my employers wouldn't see it in the same light. I'm prepared to take the risks as they stand, but I would potentially reconsider if the heat was turned up. I would not hang myself out to dry for 'the good of the cause".

I would say that anyone in a public service job, or one that puts them in direct contact with the public as the face of a governmental body, should be aware that "Joe Average" may not understand or have knowledge of how a D/s or SM relationship and therefore may think they are unsuitable for that role.

No matter how misinformed people can be, it is wise to protect yourself against possible threat or attack of any kind.

That said, I have a face pic.

The following statement is false. The previous statement is true.
Reality is a perception, normality an opinion.
No stranger to being beaten around the head with a concept. Where 'the concept' refers to a large stick.

I don't have a pic of myself on here. I don't think I would lose my job if I got found out but I am a pub manager and my only concern really is a customer finding me on here. Could make things awkward for me.

Lastly I don't want my grandchildren being taught by a Pro Domme, a sub or a gay, and if they are i don't wan't that person influencing them sexually as they are all unnatural sexual perversions.

I have no idea what that biggoted idiot is doing on here, other than constantly whinging about pro dommes.

The post linked in the OP has really ruffled my feathers. (not mia's post but the one she referred to, in case I wasn't making myself clear).

To suggest - no scrap that - to outright state that anyone that is not exclusively heterosexual is an unnatural perversion - and not using the terminology in an ironic sense is bloody offensive. so much for tolerance or YKIOK being a common belief on this site.

I wouldn't dream of discussing anything kink wise in the work place - I wouldn't even make jokes or allusions towards being kinky since that is not professional. I do not see why anyone should be banned from teaching, however, if they happen to be gay, as the person in the linked post was suggesting.

How would being gay affect their teaching ability? This is 2011 for goodness sake not the Dark Ages!

ETA: I have face pics up as I now run a munch so it is useful to be recognisable (though by no means compulsory), but I make sure I do not have sexually explicit pictures up on my profile just in case my work place did have an issue.

I see to issues here.

Firstly you take the attitude of either its no-ones business and that includes the media. Or its on display so the media doesn't matter. Seems a tendency to have it both ways.

Secondly saying its part of your sexuality implies lack of choice, would you want someone who claims its natural and part of their sexuality to teach your kids? There is nothing in this philosophy that implies choice and self control.

Thankfully the public sector has to lead the way in equality at work so it would be exceptionally hard for a teacher, nurse or other professional to be struck off simply for being kinky. The grey area is no doubt around the issue of charging for "sexual" services (by lawful definition - which as I'm not a lawyer I don't know) - which is in itself legally dubious at best and could therefore lead to a criminal conviction and affect your employment status regarding being in the care of others.

I have pics here but, for obvious reasons, it's unlikely anyone could ever make a proven link. Be cautious is probably the best advice.

It is not recommended that prison officers have their personal lives on the internet for reasons other than privacy. What goes on between people at a fetish night should come under 'private' and it's one of the reasons I go nuts when I see phones and cameras come out.

When I was the first port of call for new muncherians I would tell them to decide whether they should be 'out' or 'in' very carefully and if the answer was 'in' think about how much they disclose, either on the web or in person. I would never advise people in teaching, etc., to disclose this unless they knew their fellow-sceners very well. Young people declaring that as students they were happy to be out and proud were always cautioned about areas of employment in the future and that the future does indeed come round!

Certain professions have the 'do not bring the profession into disrepute' clause which the thread you mentioned could apply to and should I multi-task and take a job as a psychiatric nurse while working as a publicly-declared dominatrix I'd dob myself in as it would be a clear conflict of interests and would undermine patients' confidence in me so negating my ability to actually nurse them.

Playing privately in a none-professional manner is completely different and my colleagues were never bothered about Monday morning tales around the cooler involving handcuffs and crops. There was no tinternet, however, and had there been I wouldn't have had pics and identifying posts up for just anyone to see.

As a dominatrix I am out. What is private is who, when and where and that is to protect the privacy of my clients.

My work as a dominatrix is not legally dubious and could not lead to a criminal conviction. People who charge money to have sex are similarly no more legally dubious than anyone else running their own business.
