It was all going reasonably well until this bit:

The link between sexual violence and consensual rough play has troubled researchers since humans could scratch out a line between pleasure and pain.

That seemed to very much dilute the otherwise positive spin.

Also, it was a shame to see so many bigots replying to the discussion. My favourite of the objections that were cited towards BDSM was:

It's the weirdness that matters though. And consent isn't the issue. Just because there are a two weirdos at it doesn't make it less odd.

Good argument. Well-presented.

Ironic hints at BDSM in a completely risible Rihanna video video, crikey - hold the front page! I was expecting something stylish and sexy, which this is definitely not.

The usual rambling drivel from Nichi Hodgson, whoever she is. Most straight journalists just cannot write anything sensible about BDSM because they have no actual knowledge of it and do not wish to find out, thank you very much. They can only regurgitate what they have been told by others, usually of extremely dubious provenance.

Pamela Stephenson is the only Guardian correspondent I have noticed who appears to display a genuinely enlightened and, I suspect, experienced point of view.

The main issue here seems to be whether a video like this should get airtime before noon. I would have thought not, I wouldn't enjoy explaining to children why those people are tied up like that...perhaps because they have been naughty? :-D

Rihanna has great back, that is about your only consolation here. Crap song too. Sales are probably slipping...

In today's Metro was a pic from her new video. All pink soft fuzzy flowers softcore porn if you ask me. Haven't seen the video, but if it's all "ooh! gentle!" I'm gonna be slightly peeved, especially if they don't cause a stir about it. How come sex always has to be nicey-nicey?

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Rare positive coverage though, in the mainstream press, whether or not is based on first hand experience.

I think it's a very positive piece. I read it expecting to be irritated, as I usually am when reading anything written by the uninformed, but even after:

The link between sexual violence and consensual rough play has troubled researchers since humans could scratch out a line between pleasure and pain.

I was left with the impression of a postive spin on BDSM. In fact it seemed to me that only a very perfunctory attempt had been made to put the "anti" argument.

Good to see there are other Guardian reader on this site, I've often felt I was the only one.

It is a good article and what I would expect from the Guardian, unlike some other newspapers. I am sure there will be the usual rabid outcry in the tabloids about it.

Maybe the Guardian will help move society to having a rational debate about BDSM, I won't hold my breath though. I think it will be a while till people in certain jobs/occupations can be out safely.

A rare example of positive press for bdsm. But this must be the only thread indirectly started by that video.

They called it BDSM. They got some of the history right.

I give The Guardian a good 9 out of 10 for this story. Well done!

the writer wot wrote it used to blog for 'erotic review' so one would hope they would at least have the contacts (if not the personal knowledge) to have got their facts right.
