The SNP now have a majority in the Scottish Parliament and will hold a referendum on Scottish Independence.

a) what do you think the result will be? Opinion polls give varied results, with few showing a majority in favour.

b) would Scottish Independence be good for Scotland?

c) would Scottish Independence be good for England?

I think it would be great. I'd move up there like a shot.

From the way Salmond spoke yesterday, it doesn't seem likely a referendum will be any time soon. Given all the work and time it's taken to get the SNP into the position they have now, it would be foolish to dive right in without building on the success and giving the Scots more reasons to vote for independence.

This town needs an enema.

I've not yet heard a solid reason for independence.

How would Scotland benefit from such an action?

Let's televise and broadcast the raping of kings.

I should have thought it was obvious, but here's the main reasons:

1. It becomes a smaller country, thus having greater democratic accountability.

2. It can sever itself from English politics, thus neatly withdrawing from all the ingrained stupidity of those politics. Such as the inflated military spending.

3. A constitutional fresh start.

4. Control over it's waters and resources. We've had most of the oil but it's a great place for tidal and wind power.

And so on. I have no idea why any Scotsman would want to be ruled by an Englishman, while living in Scotland, just as I resent the idea of being ruled by a Scot while living in England. We're not the same country and we never were.

There are plus sides for England too, indeed there aren't really any negatives either way. I think English politics is a bit to the right of Scottish politics, so we'd have to deal with a greater chance of Tory government and the chaos and disorder that brings, but if we got rid of Wales and Ulster too it could be great.

Bigger countries are not better, indeed they are usually worse. Splitting the UK probably wouldn't do any real harm.

Invade Scotland? You nuts? I'd be more inclined to rebuild Hadrian's Wall and call it even.

A couple of years ago Ireland was the SNP's model for an independent Scotland...
