You're sure everybody is doing everything they can? This isn't a natural disaster, this is one nation, protected by it's allies from international rebuke, using tanks, planes and soldiers to murder it's own citizens in huge numbers.

As far as I can see, there is no 'work' for the Syria situation. The army won't win, even if it does it'll just start a long term counter-insurgency against it's own people. There's no way that the west can intervene, because Russia and China have Syria's back.

So really all we get to do as outsiders is sit back and watch the chaos unfold.

and as outsiders we can also point out anything that is making things worse, like tabloids stirring up trouble everywhere

to my own shame i suspect some of them are british, and for that i am truly sorry

And most of the tabloids stirring up trouble are not even Murdoch publications.Mind you the last tabloid empire we need stirring it up is News International!

Stirring up trouble? There are tanks firing on a city full of people. Just how much more trouble could there be?

Not that it matters, NATO and Co have got the war with Afghanistan to wind up and the war with Iran to start, so a new front in Syria isn't on the cards.

we know DR and i am really glad we know, i truly am, and thanks to that i am sure those who can do something will

flaming things up will just make it worse

theres a big difference twixt reporting something and whipping it up into a frenzy

any journalist who does NOT stick to the facts does journalism the greatest dis-service, but it does the worst dis-service to the people who are involved

the worlds sicknessess

I think it highlights the structural problem with the UNSC. 5 states were given full time membership and the veto, the aim was to avoid another world war. The cold war ended, and that threat reduced, but those same states now wield disproportionate power in issues which are much less important than those where the veto should come into play. On top of that internal issues are outside the UN mandate.

The track record shows no consistency, and interpretation is left to the implementers - which is just crazy. The issues raised also show no consistency and reflect the interests of the five. Tibet anyone?

Or Georgia, or Iraq, and so on.

Saw some footage from a hospital in the city under attack today and am definitely going to need to have a memory enema. It's a horrific situation and it's getting worse, not to mention Syria has form for massacres like this, often on a much bigger scale, a few decades ago the father of the current dictator had about twenty thousand killed.

I think to an extent a lot of it might be sectarian, rather than tribal as in Libya. Sectarianism has to rank as one of the worst things the human race has ever cooked up.

Isn't Tony Blair the Middle East peace envoy? Put him on a plane with a one way ticket to Damascus and we've done our bit.
*Like* Even if Syria is still a bit dangerous, couldn't we send him to the Khyber Pass or Kirkuk first, now that his efforts have paid off and we've sorted that all out?

@Romola has pronounced.

Dress Illary Clinton and Barack Osama (forcibly) into u.s. grunt army uniforms. Parachute evil witch and her co-puppet into downtown Damascus. With Tony Bliar, Manglesin, Molliband, Cleggo and Cameroon, Sharkozy and the Merkel. Just the nine of 'em, armed with only a banner. Which states (no pun intended) -

We come, we see, we want, we will kill to possess. As we know you have no nuclear weapons (as slight deterrent), NATO will drone-bomb and trash your sovereign country and kill all your leaders. (If our trained mercenary insurgents don't bump 'em off first). Not to to steal your oil, understand. Nor to impose yet another puppet regime to obey our commands. It's just our decision that you'll be destroyed, unless you swallow our twisted forms of globalised banking, demockracy...etc?

Insidious creeping Blitzkrieg in progress? From straits of Gibraltar to borders of China, right before your eyes. Spreading our far superior system. Heh! Oooh...sensitive, eh? When Adolf did same he was deservedly called nasty names and Had To Be Stopped. We can have nuclear-electric power, Iran cannot. Welcome to WW3..?

Whilst the anti western rhetoric is all very good, meanwhile a genocide is taking place. In the name of western imperialism? No - In the name of Russia keeping an arms customer and a military base.

Some posters have (quite rightly) questioned the legitimacy of the action in Libya, and questioned whether the former regime really was on the point of committing an atrocity, whether the protesters were exagerating it, or provoking it. I think this goes to show that you really can't take that risk.
