What a wonderful evening i've just had!
i had never stepped foot into a real theatre before tonight and oh what an experience. The atmosphere, the lighting, the show itself.....all fantastic. i am still buzzing!
To explain: my youngest daughter, all of 10 years old has just taken part in something called 'Taiko to Achieve'. Not on her own of course, there was ten schools involved in all....a total of 900 children ages ranging right through from infant to high school. The whole thing was a part of something called 'The Learning Zone' and this particular event has been in the planning for about 15 months culminating in tonights performance.
And what a performance!
They were all absolutely fantastic, their drumming skills were truly amazing to hear let alone the singing in Japanese and the dancing. By the way, 'taiko' is Japanese for drum and that's what the whole show was based on. Yes it was loud and powerful but oh so rhythmic and complicated. How the hell do they remember it all!! i could type all night and still not be able to give it the justice it deserves, it really was that good.
OK, so i'm a little biased as my little one was up there with them, i'm soooo damn proud of her. She was spot on, never missing a beat. She's on such a high, i reckon it'll take me a week to bring her back down to earth.
Apart from her particular piece in the show i reckon the best bit was the grand finale. The 'experts' who had taught the kids this new skill and who had just put on a display for us all then went on to include the audience. They got us all clapping along to the beat, repeating the same set piece over and over. Then suddenly the lights went down again and all the children started coming back out all together....yes all 900 of them at once! Some came out onto the stage and the rest were coming through the doors behind us and began filling all the aisles and across the bottom of the stage. They all wore illuminous wrist bands and wands and were all joining in with the same set piece we were already doing. Basically the whole of the theatre were united and it looked and sounded.....well, lets just say i had tears in my eyes. It really moved me.
Sorry if this has bored you but tonight i am just one very proud mum and i wanted to share it with you all.
