It is rare I am moved to repost/promote petitions but this just disgusted me

A totally unprovoked and sickening attack on a Trans woman ... that in itself is bad enough .. but the staff did absolutely fuck all to help her or stop things.
Bet there would have been a totally different reaction if it had been based of race or religion ... Imagine the uproar if McD's staff had allowed such an attack on a black woman ? or on a Muslim by a gang of Christians ?

That is totally horrendous Signed. Any idea if there is further news on the woman who was attacked? The seizure is a really worrying matter to see. Becalmed, adrift in a jewelled sea. Edited 23 Apr 11, 9:44 PM by NimueBanditQueen

This has made me very angry to see. Any one who uses violence on a defenceless person for no reason is just scum. I hope the attackers end up doing seriously hard time for this. As for the Mc D workers to stand around and not even make a 911 call to police or ambulance even when she was having a siezure is breath taking.

I do not condone this behaviour and those who encouraged this assault should be sacked and criminal charges pressed. However standing by and doing nothing to prevent an attack is not a crime in itself. Many people may well be too scared to help a victim for fear the attacker turn on them too. Also with the mass availability of guns in America it is not inconceivable that you may get shot as two tourists have recently been. I wonder what the company policy is in these circumstances - phone the police and do not get involved I hazard a guess. What would the advice from the police be - in uk most likely call the police and do not get involved otherwise you might get cautioned like the lady who handbagged robbers at a jewelery shop recently. Indeed.... but, reportedly they didn't just stand by, they encouraged it. Did you in fact follow the link? Becalmed, adrift in a jewelled sea.

Yeah - I followed the link - all I could hear was the guy yelling "stop" Where the demand for the staff to be hung for their part in this comes from I can't quite work out Maybe they have a quota for lynchings over there Someone got beat up (it's America) - now you know why they insist on the right to bear arms If I could pin this down more as a "hate crime" then fair enough - but that vid evidence is just another day in the land of the free This is what it's like in many areas over there - what are you going to do ? - hang entire states ? If you really want to complain - then start off with how people like this consider themselves worthy to judge other cultures Ever wondered who the devil comes to for ideas ?

What is also very sad to see is the reported age of the two people arrested/charged - 14 and 18 years old. School children are not being taught to be tollerant it would seem. But with such a strong bible belt influence is that surprising in some parts of America. Is it possibly two badly behaved young people having "fun" at what they percieve to be an easy target? Was drink or drugs involved? There is a stong view - completely wrong in my opinion - against same sex relationships and transgendered people. Chris

The man yelling stop was not one of the 'staff'. I do wonder from what he is wearing if he was a security guard though - although that does not necessaarily suggest he is a security guard for that shop. He and the later lady who did try to interfere have my admiration. It does take guts to stand up in a situation like that. The actual official staff can be seen wearing red tops. It's a McDonald's, surprise, surprise, they wear red tops. Early on you see one member of staff retrieving a cell-phone for one of the attackers from near the head of the person who has been attacked, who is now down on the floor. From about 1:40 onwards you can hear the staff laughing, commenting, finding the whole thing funny. It does appear to be someone standing with their group who is filming it. If not a member of staff, someone who knows them. They continue laughing while the trans-girls is dragged along the floor, while another customer attempts to interfere. Not until much later, when the attacked person is finally injured with a seizure-causing head wound do they decide to take it seriously. And as someone who has hostessed in American Bar/Restaurants on the Tex-Mex border where there are a LOT of guns, - the mere fact that there are guns does not result in OR excuse a 'stand back and let it happen' attitude. Pretty obvious given that members of the public were willing to interfere. @Safeandsoundbdsm. I really especially despair of those who hide behind parroting: 'The police say not to' as an excuse for cowardice. The truth of the matter is... you have to do what you have to do with what is right in front of you. The law of the jungle first, the law of the land second, because the law of the land will always arrive a poor second. Even the law of the law (this law, this land acknowledges that). If you wait for the forces of authority, by that time it may be too late, you or someone else may be dead. If it comforts you to stand behind your little homily, good. It wouldn't comfort me.
I hope I never get attacked by someone when you are standing around. <Edited to add, no they weren't having fun, they are angry, you can see it in their posture and hear it in their voices. > Becalmed, adrift in a jewelled sea. Edited 24 Apr 11, 12:08 PM by NimueBanditQueen

I can fully understand the comments about individuals being concerned for their own safety when "getting involved" against a group of people. BUT ... A GROUP of staff doing nothing to prevent two girls attacking someone ? I am afraid, for me, the excuse of not wanting to get hurt is null and void when the group standing around watching outnumbers the people attacking. I bet they would have got involved if that had been a child being attacked ? .. or a frail old woman ? ... or someone in a wheelchair ? There may be no law forcing someone to assist another human being ... but I hope to hell if ever someone I know or love was in that situation those around them would have more in the way of simple human decency. I agree with the above. There is an update to the story now, with a link to an interview of the woman that was attacked. It says, in the most recent article, that the assault was filmed by a worker, who has since been fired. I just can't believe so many people stood around and watched such a thing. Except for one older lady who did intervene. |
