An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.

"External intrusion" - That's a new one.

This is making my move to xbox-land all the more tempting.

Edited to update some lame spelling. Saves me editing twice as to the explanation for the first edit.

Console fail makes the baby Jebus smile. Even if Sony didn't deserve this it would be classic lulz. The fact that they do just makes it sweeter.

Meh, fails happen on both sides - even as a 360 owner. I remember XBL had quite the habit of going down for 48 hours after Christmas as new console owners logged on with their new toys, only to overload the system due to poor infrastructure planning. They even gave away some games to make up for it a couple of years ago.

But it must be said, it's been much more robust in the last couple of years, and this is a big (and not terribly well explained) outage at this point.

I could forgive (relatively simple) technical failures like that much more easily than the customer service clusterfuck that has been Sony's response to what has happened. It's bloody pathetic (and I don't even have a PS3).

The reason for the system being down as you should know,is because of the hacker who got in and stole names, email address, phone numbers etc .In short terms, ID theft but they,Sony, are not sure if any credit card details were taken. In the meantime the system is down and repairs are underway. Beware that if were signed up to this network you may get phishing emails from the hacker's fellow criminals.Do not answer and deleate them.

I'm aware of all that, that has nothing to do with the point I made. I was talking about the total failure of Sony's customer service - how they kept this secret for so long, despite the severity of what happened.

I heard it suggested on the radio that part of the reason was that they didn't want anything to interfere with the launch of their new tablet devices. It just wouldn't do to have a bad news story spoil that, would it?

Finally got my PS3 back online last night. About fucking time.

At least there giving everyone a couple of free games.
