I understand your viewpoint on this. It's one of the worst forms of hypocritical voyeurism. But of course the truth behind it is that the vast majority of the vanilla population find these sort of cases strangely fascinating. I suppose there must be people who do switch over/off but for every one of these there are hundreds who avidly switch on to get the latest fix of horror. Edited 13 Apr 11, 5:05 PM by BooteDom

Over the years I have really enjoyed 'Waking the Dead' and found the final episodes to be particularly strong and fascinating stuff. My radar for getting offended when vanillas portray bdsm in a bad way is usually very sensitive. I really didn't get my knickers in a twist about WTD because they didn't portray BDSM which relates to consensual activities but instead were clear they were talking about a murderer with non consensual sexual sadism as part of his criminal psychology. What I saw portrayed was in every way so far away from WIITWD that it just didn't register with me to feel maligned. I don't even recall much reference or evidence to back up his being a sexual sadist, the murderer seemed just to enjoy torturing and killing. There was nothing much that suggested from what they said in the drama that he was getting his rocks off while doing the bad stuff, just that he did it. It was more an assumption that by having a torture dungeon, he must be sexually excited by it. 24/7 subs and slaves can and do live similar lives, it is only the concept of 'ownership' which separates them.

I love Waking the Dead and this last series has been particularly strong. I can't imagine why they have cancelled it. I'd also totally do Trevor Eve. I am officially old.

A shot of a drawer full of large dildos and butt plugs, under the table? The fact that the criminal psychiatrist on the team, in her expert opinion classifies him as one?

I still maintain that those things are sexual items which could be used to humiliate or torture someone but not necessarily be sexually exciting for the torturer whilst doing it. Using sexual items does not necessarily make it a sexually motivated act. After all, would it be sexual if you used a big dildo to beat a guy to death? The point I was trying to make was that, despite the assertion made by the criminal psychiatrist, there was no real explanation or evidence that the torturer/murderer was getting off on what he did in a sexual way. How could anyone have really known as no one saw him doing his evil work and as he was dead, he couldn't accept or deny the diagnosis of his motivation being sexual. I thought it was a bit of an easy assumption to come to but could have been well off the mark.Expert opinion, however expert it might be, is not fact. All the stuff we saw on the programme was flashbacks pointing us to see the crimes in a certain way. All they had was a disused torture chamber and a vast array of bones.
