Im a massive fan of this show...but watching the new episode on now and dismayed to see a portrayal of yet another "sexual sadist" mass murderer.

I know these killers exist...but its just so dismaying to see yet another dark, perverted and twisted portrayal of BDSM.Plus they seemed to enjoy showing as many sensationalist items as they could.

I know what we practice has zero relevance to this...its the same reason I agree with those who say putting children and animals as limits is ridiculous. But surely the majority of people watching it will make the negative connections? Probably all been discussed before...but just didn't expect this type of sensationalism from such a program.

Ditto love the show.

But

Where did you get the negative BDSM connection? I know there are a few here would love to be able to play with some of those toys ;-) but I honestly did not think there was any attempt to link the sexual sadist murderer with those who enjoy consensual BDSM.

P. sure that's the negative connotation.

Basically as I am seeink it, Ray, the problem is that you are not callink your girlfriend for five months. You see, the hot babies like to feel wanted. If you are not callink them on the phone for a while, it is like a way of saying "you are worst song, played on ugliest guitar"

They didn't say "all those who praactice BDSM are twisted evil people" but as has been pointed out they described the murderer as a sexual sadist...with enough "toys" to kit out any dungeon or shop.

The general public won't make the distinction...any sexual sadist = very evil person.

I don't want to sound like I'm getting up on my high horse about this (yeah maybe its too late for me to be saying that) and I didn't feel strongly enough to switch off...its still a very good show. Its just disappointing...and I would be curious to know what percentaage of murderers fall into this template (I'm sure I once read it was super rare).

And yes I did find it quite an "exciting" set...that is until they showed the kids in it.

Also...some sex shop somewhere must have made a fortune supplying the props ;)

Yes, was watching with the mrs who knows of my interest in such matters, and did wonder what we get out of such "toys".

I said it was knowing and trusting that the person you are with WILL NOT go that final bit, hopefully!

Well, if you insist on being so contemptuous of the general public, you're hardly in a position to complain if they are contemptuous of you ;-)

To be honest, this popular IC prejudice doesn't appear in my experience to correspond with wider society's perception of BDSMers: they usually seem to befar more likely to think of us as comical, whiney losers, along the lines of the characters in the series "Human Remains". (I can't imagine what web sites they might have visited to get that impression!)

At the end of the day, in drama (as in real life) a mutilating serial killer needs a motive, and the only two simple enough to fit one episode are childhood abuse and sadism. Of the two, vastly more popular drama chooses childhood abuse than sadism, so I'd say we're actually ahead of the curve in terms of representation :-)

I didn't see the show but good for you for spotting the negative connotions for BDSM. It's a shortcut for program makers to bring in BDSM imagery to make things appear sinister and menacing. It's good to highlight and discuss these uses because 1) we as a group need to understand how it affects the perception of BDSMers among the general public and 2) we need to work to educate program makers that their thoughtlessness is damaging to the image of an innocent minority.

I don't have a problem with TV companies who will occasionally use S&M as a comedy element, it's only the endless association with pychopathic killers which I object to. If every fictional killer used a golf club to brain their victims, how long would it be before we were all making a connection between playing golf and serial murder?

I think the show was a good chilling drama, but yes, agree for those who practice consensual BDSM with adults, it does impose a "look at these weirdos" judgement.

Clearly the IC community consists of people who practice consensual and adult BDSM; there are far more vanilla rapists and murderers I suspect, and one show out of (how many?) is probably not unbalanced.

... submitting to the dark side? ...

I missed the last 10 minutes :( but I agree, the whole sadist thing did paint bdsm in a bad light....

Cool dungeon though :-D

Do you mean the Waking Dead or the Walking Dead?

I just Googled the Waking Dead and found nothing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Walking_Dead_(T...

However The Walking Dead is ace! It has just started on Channel Five but I previously saw it on FX Channel.
