Putting aside the bleakness and deprivation did anyone else find Sugar's introduction to 'The Crimson Petal and the White' hot? http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0107ry0/Th... It's the author's introduction to the realities of victorian London of course but delivered in Romola Garai's matter of fact, superior tone I couldn't help but think of a D/s context “You've allowed yourself to be led astray ...and there's no hope of finding your way back” “..you don't even know what hour it is do you?” hot!

Too bleeding nasty to be hot, to be honest.
The introduction played up the seediness so much that it came across as more dodgy, unpleasant and vile than erotic, I'd have said. But if you enjoyed it more than I did, that's fair enough. The hurt gets worse and the heart gets harder... Edited 11 Apr 11, 5:22 PM by geekonaleash

I couldn't decide whether the programme was meant to be a spoof (in which case it wasn't good enough to laugh at), or serious (in which case I wanted to split my sides). The abrupt switches between trendy camera shake and tripod shots put my in mind of Benny Hill's avant-garde director ("No, we just switched to black and white because we ran out of colour film"), and I assume were down to two different production teams on on different continents. The way her accent switched between modern newsreader and Hollywood cockney was, I guess, due to reshoots. But some of the continuity errors, touches like and adding CGI lens flare to a period drama - they must have been deliberate, surely? Having comedy actors play all the male leads very nearly clinched it, though....
No, dreadful as it is, I think this week's ration of T&A television will have to be met by BBC Four's rerun of Fanny Hill Edited 10 Apr 11, 5:12 PM by Ian_2007

was I the only one expecting Chris O'Dowd to make a flippant comment about rebooting? I wanted to like the programme but some of it felt a bit ammateur dramatics in production. Just my 2p worth Well you bit my lip and drew first blood /And warmed my cold, cold heart

I've not seen the dramatisation yet, but the book's fantastic. Having first read the rather bizarre 'Under the Skin' by Michel Faber and enjoyed his writing style, I have to say I can't see how anyone, unless exceptionaly gifted, could transfer all the subtleties and multi-layering of the Crimson Petal and the White to the context of a four-parter, and thus I'm prepared to be disappointed.

I don't own a Telly, but watched this on iplayer...i thought it was rather good!! But then again...'pictures that move?' with sound, and music too? Maybe I'm just easily impressed and out of touch "the purpose of life is to live creatively, love and be kind" Anne Rice "Ah but it's being creative in how you do that thats fun. And sometimes you have to be quite firm" JV

I thought it was an ok watch...certainly nothing special. Actually seemed quite dated...like something from the 90's..taking a period drama and trying to make elements modern.

I saw it. My conclusion: Loved the section where his timid brother asked "how can you find those loose women" and his brother bawled his head off. Yes it was bleak, but meant to be surely? To me quite realistic. Clever they used the "strong ale" to knock the men out instead of having to "perform". Clearly I am not as technically minded as some of these posts but simply looking at the bigger picture. Curious to see the next one cos now I feel we have covered the gist of it. Oh and WHAT "examination" was the physician performing on his wife? Camera shot to her head and all he said was "A little more, A little more, Thankyou". Was he fucking her, or just using his hand? I maybe perverted but just want to know and using Richard E Grant for such a part? Good on her for trying to stand up to him, now she is getting better. Actually was she really ill, or did they just make her ill?

No doubt the atmosphere was bleak. As I said, I wasn't referring to that; just the way Romola Garai delivered the opening monologue
