Tick tock, it's sadness o'clock. (1)

And so, the countdown begins. I just found out that Tiny departs the household on Sunday - whilst I'm away for the weekend. In that sense, the timing couldn't have been better (I'm not sure a weepily snotty woman would help the handover proceedings any) - but oh, I'd give so much for things to be different.

I know, I know. A year ago I'd have told you I don't like cats. I've never had much to do with them, and my best friends' kitties were the archetypical "let's play until she feeds us, then let's ignore her totally" types.

But when my flatmate cautiously revealed she'd adopted her friend's kitten, just before I moved in, I thought, hey, cute, why not. Sharing's already going to be an adventure...

I've spent the last year utterly smitten. Wrapped around a soft black paw. Got home on Friday night (late) to a dirty protest (she only poos inside when she's cross, and clearly she felt she had to express her annoyance at being left alone that late - how very dare we?) and, rather than matching her crossness myself (though I probably wouldn't have pooed in the hallway, I'd not had that much to drink) I cleaned it up and then gave her some hot kitten lovin' to make up for her abandonment. (Nowt rude, just strokage. "Tickly-under-the-chin"-age, to be precise.)

Anyway. I'm going to stop, because I could be soppy for hours. I love how, when the flatmate's away, I wake up to find Tiny watching me all comfy from the computer chair. I'm intrigued by how cosy she finds my towel. I'm just enjoying watching her finally getting to grips with the neighbourhood cats who invade the garden... there are burgeoning friendships there, about to be brought to an abrupt and early ending.

I know why she's going, and it's the right thing for two out of the three of us. But I shall miss her so very much. Despite, or possibly because of, her desperate need to walk across any given keyboard I happen to be using...

You see, that's kind of what I like about cats. They're so bleedin' awkward.

But I know what you mean. I was never much of a dog person till earlier this year, when I had to look after a friend's dog while she was away. Now I'm thinking semi-seriously about getting one of my own.

In other news, another friend of mine wants me to look after her cat while she's away - for about six weeks. What am I, Animal bloody Rescue?
