For fat girls. (That's fat as merely descriptive, not derogatory!) I am determined at some stage to find a way of wearing stockings that I feel comfortable (=sexy) in. I just don't find them flattering in my eyes or indeed wearable.
So, I was wondering if anyone of a larger size had any top tips or recommended brands/methods/anything else I should know?
I don't really want to resign myself to stockings being something I can wear when (or, more likely, if) I ever lose enough weight that my thighs stop touching, because I can't bear that bulgy unpleasantness and generally uncomfortable friction. I've been eyeing up some more vintage style girdle-esque riggings too, because my second issue is that I don't like how thin the lines on many suspender belts are and just don't think they're very attractive on me/my figure.
Basically, I'm a hopeless stocking noob. Help please and thank you!

Try leg avenue as they do stockings not by just height but by weight so you know the stockings will support you. We've met and you're a waif compared to some of us I wear good old Marks and Spencer, hold ups or garter, they fit fine, as you can buy them in several different sizes. I can guarantee they will fit you fine. Several different colours, and also some of the patterned stockings are available in different sizes too. |

I'll second Marks and Spencers. They do four sizes in stockings and they will undoubtedly fit you. They're the best value for money I can find and they actually fit (and their holdups do actually stay up). Most of the fashion high-street shops tend to do one or two sizes in stockings and are not worth visiting if you're anything over a size 12. I've had some decent stockings/holdups from specialist online hosiery retailers - Stockings Direct do some nice ones, but they're more expensive than Marks and not that much different (certainly no better IMO). I would send a word of caution about fully fashioned nylons as Empress Martine mentioned. They are lovely but they are very much sized on height, so don't be tempted to go up a size or two as they will just bag around your ankle. I have FF stockings from What Katie Did and they fit me fine (I eventually brought them in the size right for my height). Stockings HQ looks like a definite winner, thank you! I think this and this were exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. And I'll bear M&S in mind for the stocking part of it, that seems remarkably easy - I think I was expecting to have to go to all kinds of lengths to get something to fit/suit.

Just to add, I recently bought some leg avenue stockings, in the largest size, and they're due to be given away to a friend because they don't fit. Avoid. M&S win. Their regular stockings are fab, as are their seamed holdups, and also they do some holdups with lacing and bows on the welt, which are cute too. As for suspenders, I have three of the sort you've linked to and they're fab.
For pretty, I also have some Freya ones that match my underwear - the only downside to those are that they are rubber / plastic clasps, not metal. Solution: I've bought some metal clasps on the internet and will be asking my friendly local sewing-machine-man to swap them over. Edited 26 Mar 11, 7:05 PM by littlenic |

I've just bought some very nice, cream, seemed stockings from M&S. £12 for two pairs, the pack includes a (rather flimsy)cream suspender belt. I've sworn off hold-ups since I had embarrassing episode recently in a pair of M&S hold-ups. |

I also recommend M&S. Although my legs are quite skinny, I'm 6ft tall so need to choose carefully. Anything in M&S size "Extra Size" is usually great. From a watcher's point of view, I'd say that black opaque hosiery has the most flattering & slimming effect. I assume you already know about avoiding a glossy finish - and I certainly don't need to tell YOU to wear high heels! Surprisingly, I have found the best source of extra long opaque black stockings to be in H&M! It is certainly not always, but sometimes in the larger stores you get lucky. Look for the 40 denier ones. |

I don't know that I'm going in for hold ups, I think I'm far too accident prone and they're incredibly likely to end up coming down even if I get ones that are good and the right size. M&S definitely seems like the place to go. Thanks! |

Levee stockings for me, all the way. Look great even on very fat legs
