Depends.

Some do look cheap and trashy, some look fab.

Mine's on my derriere and it's small (the tat, not the derriere!) as I would need to be careful about body adornments vis-a-vis work.

I thought about getting one for twenty years so by the time I did get it done at 40, to my design, I was sure about it. Got another one in mind, got the basic idea and location, might take another year before I commit to it. Never an impetuous decision taken in the dark mists of blurred thoughts though!

I've seen a few gorgeous women who've totally defaced their lovely bodies with numerous, trashy tattoos. I know one woman who's arms resemble rolled up comics ... dreadful!

Like the idea of a small, red hourglass on the abdomen though.

I love my tattoos I have 4. They are all in places I can hide easily though as people judge so quickly if you have them even in this day and age. They all mean something to me and mark a point in my life. The first one I got was a buttefly which is shit apparently but I love it as much today as the day I got it when I was 18. It was designed for me and represents my transition from a shy little catipillar to a beautiful evil butterfly. My most recent is in memory of a freind who died and due to him living on another continent I was unable to go to the funeral. Now he will always be with me. Everyone is entitled to their opinion I mean I can't really understand facial hair but there we go :P I have seen some pretty crap tattoos and tattoos whilst drunk are just stupid. But done right in the right place on the right person meaning the right thing is just pure art.

Before I used to say 'If it's meaningful to the person then fair enough' but that can have so many different meanings too. the tattoo may not have any meaning but the artwork could be technically brilliant and the tattoo could be aesthetically beautiful, so that's a meaning in itself.

Then I tried to broaden that with 'if you had a real reason to get it then fair enough' but that can branch into allsorts as well. The reason itself could be getting a tattoo and the experience alone.

So in the end I just thought to myself 'fuck it, if I don't like it I'll keep quiet about it and if I do, I may comment on it or ask about further'

I love tattoos themselves if I find them nice so it's easier for me to just stick to that than judge different aspects for every tattoo I see. I do think it's important to pick something you won't completely regret and know how to look after it, though.

Mine have personal meanings and I find it beautiful, others may not see it the same way but I wouldn't like to be judged by it.

I love them and now you have given me a title for the 3 I have got.

So when I visit the tramp stamp man I can ask him for a new butterfly or something equally as shit.

a tramp stamp is only the nickname for a tattoo across the lower back!

all my tattoos have a meaning personal to me, if you don't like them i don't care :)

I like MY tattoos. They were all chosen for specific reasons which i share with people who matter. I don't give a toss what anyone else thinks of them. My body..my business.

As to other people's tattoos, that is their business. Whether i like or dislike them is of no consequence.

Same could be said of piercings. Why do them? Some like..some don't. Such is life.

jules.
