This is the worst disaster our country have ever had as far as I know.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Sendai_earthqu...
My heart is with everyone in Japan. I have been watching Japanese live news TV program via the internet over 30 hours now. Two main newsreaders have been on TV since I started to watch the news. They have kept reading news without a break.
Beep sounds of Earthquake Early Warning have come from Japanese TV continuously. Then a newsreader says things like 'A big wave about M5 is going to hit in a few seconds to a few minutes around xxx prefecture area! Be prepared. Please open the front door and windows, but close the curtain if you are in the house'(it is a common sense when earthquake, by the way). Sometimes I can see the TV studio in Tokyo is shaken after that.
This earthquake is the biggest earthquake in Japan in at least 150 years. Surprisingly it was M8.8. Even that awful Great Hanshin Earthquake I experienced in 1995 was M7.3...
The seismic energy of a M8.8 is about 180 times the M7.3 Great Hanshin Earthquake that killed over 6000 people. It is not just about the energy. The area which have been affected is very very large, like entire England would be in! The massive tectonic plates that are more than 500 km long(310 miles) and 100 km wide(62 miles) moved.
Some cities, towns, villages were vanished. they are under the water and mud. The places I visited and loved are not there anymore. My beautiful country is destroyed badly.
The actual conditions of damage have been exposed little by little.
The most shocking news so far is about the big numbers of missing people in one small town. Minamisanriku town in Miyagi prefecture's population is just about 18,000. Government said there has been no confirmation of 10.000 people's whereabouts yet... Unbelievable. Just too shocking. Every building/house was destroyed in the town. There might be other areas like this, but still can't be found out. Really scary.
People are still trapped, isolated and waiting to be rescued. Only a little time is left now. Please, please pray for them.
At the same time, conflagrations have occurred at many petrochemical complexes/factories. They are still burning now. Fire engines can't even reach there because of the roads with the collapse buildings or cave-ins, landslides, soil avalanches, falling down bridges. Rescue ships/tanks can't drop anchor.
Relief supplies like food/water/blanket/medicine/blood will not be able to reach people who most need them. At the moment no gas for 4.4 million households, no tap/grey water for 1.4 million households, no electricity for 445,000 households. It is predicted that strong aftershocks will continue for a month from now on. Tsunami, fire, sector collapse, nuclear disaster are very worrying, too.
However, I believe we will recover. We will stand up again. See the remarkable rehabilitation of post-WW2 Japan. The whole world said that Japan was finished, but a miracle happened. We will make a miracle happen again. I believe inour strength and tenacity.
Please do a little help. Please do whatever you can even just a really really small thing. Make your own sandwiches for your everyday lunch and save a little money to donate. Or sometimes give up your everyday habit of a pint of beer or a bar of chocolate. It will definitely help someone!
(if you make a donation, make it to trusted organisations)
Thanks for reading.

My thoughts are with everyone affected, it's just awful. I'm very grateful that I live somewhere where quakes and tsunamis aren't frequent. "Nothing saves anyone's life, Sir. It just postpones their death." - Posner , The History Boys. |

I was shocked and horrified what I saw and heard on television the earthquake and tsunami has done. The sheer destruction and devastation to the prefectures in North East Japan is of an unimaginable scale. I can watch the disaster in a British and Hong Kong perspective and on Sky - the NHK World Channel. This enabled me to see reports about the heartbreak and sadness of the people very badly affected way way way beyond grief, especially people who are still waiting for news and still searching for their loved ones. I hope the international community will do everything possible whether human, finanical help or whatever to bring as much needed relief to Japan in this most difficult time for this most modern and democratic nation on earth. I also do hope everyone around the world would donate what they can to help. bootssub x

Thanks very much, everyone! I appreciate it. Please keep praying. A miracle will happen. We have to let it happen. Especially now the reports from Japan are getting worse and worse... Also I found out that some of my friends and relatives are evacuated from their home now. I am still quite busy contacting with people in Japan. Spreading various information, supporting and cheer up my friends/relatives in Japan, asking donations everywhere, etc etc etc... Surprised that I could come up with many ideas and do so much even I am in London. I will get in touch with you individually once it is settled. Thanks so so so much. I am glad I know such warm people here! xxxxx |

My thoughts go out not only to Nana but to all the Japanese people and visitors to Japan (plus their friends and families) that have been caught up in this terrible event. The bravery should be the Nuclear workers amoungst others is a testimonary to the hard work done and positive mental attitude shown by the Japanese people. The fact that severely damaged roads are being repaired and re-opened within 6 days in some areas is a great start to ensuring that there is the infrastructure in place to get the materials moves around Japan to help it recover. Naturally a large number of people have either lost their lives or sustained life changing injuries (some visible but some also invisible such as the pyschological effect this has had) and therefore my prayers go to everyone involved whether injured, a relative of the injured / deceased or the many workers providing vital support to help not only the country's infrastructure return to as close to normal ASAP but also in the assisting/dealing with the human element of this event. A donation has been made to the Red Cross and I urge other readers to follow me. Nana, I am pleased your family is safe.
