Money can't always buy style  (5)

I don't read Vanity Fair magazine, but noticed that on the front cover of the current edition (called 'The Hollywood edition') someone called Ryan Reynolds - who I hadn't previously heard of - is wearing a mutt of a garment.

It is an evening/dinner shirt, which features a wing tip collar *and* a pleat bib front(?) According to sartorial rules an evening/dinner shirt should either have a wing tip collar and plain front or a pleat bib front but with a classic collar.

Otherwise, it creates a confusing look because a wing tip collar is worn for functions such as white tie balls, whereas a pleat bib front can be worn for semi-formal black tie events. Unfortunately, the actor in the (modern) film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's 'An Ideal Husband' wears one too, which lets down the otherwise dandy character who wears it.

It just goes to show that money cannot always buy style, for Ryan Reynolds, despite having wealth and fame, probably isn't even aware of it.

He probably doesn't even have a say in it.

It's all a question of where you're standing. Americans think the Vanderbilt mansion is stylish, Russians think oligarchs' fortresses are tasteful. To me, they both look like junk shops.

Since you haven't previously heard of Ryan Reynolds, it seems safe to assume that he's being marketed to a different demographic from the one you in which you find yourself :-)

Or maybe he's just Dom? I remember one of the first manifestations I can remember was the pleasure I got from breaking the dress rules at our May Ball.....

Money and style are like yer Venn Diagram, the two coincide to different amounts...I think I have style but I'm on Incapacity benefit and have to be very careful with money. But I know a woman who has old money and style, she was brought up to be stylish, and she always looks good. Is it discipline, is it innate? All I know is she is incredibly kinky, very stylish, and seems born to it. Some, like this celeb, just get clever agents.

Much of British, European, Slavic and Asian formal wear is an evolution born of much history and tradition. Hints of military uniform, a clan or a long extinct ancient culture to which the wearer alludes kinship are present. The North American has no history, tradition and precious little culture so must instead dig around - rather like a child in a trunk of clothes in its grandparents' loft. Occasionally the results are amusing, regretably often a garish mess.
