I've got to have a lumbar puncture this week and I really don't want to. I know it's going to be a bit uncomfortable (although I should stop winging about it, for gods sake) and I'm nervous about it. I'm going to have someone with me because I have to lie flat for a few hours afterwards, and I need real human company for that- books/iPod won't do it for me.

I've got an ultrasound later today too, but not worried about that. I'm just being greedy at the moment.

oh sweetie, I feel for you I would be bricking it. Had to have a needle biopsy in my tummy and was shaking so much I couldnt sign the bloody consent form. Having said that it was not as bad as I thought and if I had to have another I would not be quite as bad. Its a fear of the unknown and although I have never had a lumbar puncture I have heard they are uncomfortable and can give you a bad headache, so watch out for that.

Best to have someone with you, even though they cant do anything, I always find it helps if you have someone there who is just focused on you.

When are you having it done.....will send positive doo dhars xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Not sure, hopefully this week. I was told I'd have a CT scan and the lumbar puncture together, but just had a call to say I need the CT scan first, so got that tomorrow afternoon.

Make sure you keep your back as rounded and curved as you can whilst they're doing it - it really does make the whole thing go much more easily. And by all means refuse to let students have a go!

With mine I was always given something to relax me, and although that is fab at making everything all pink and fluffy and you couldn't care if they start to chop your head off, it can lead you to forget to keep curved, and then it can be harder for the doctor.

It isn't the comfiest procedure in the world, but it's not actually as bad as the imagination can make it either. And yes, keeping flat for a few hours afterwards apparently keeps the killer headache at bay. I certainly never fancied sitting up just to see if it was true or not!

Good luck, and try not to worry :-)

CT scan is absolutely nothing to worry about, you just lay on a table and go through a big polo. If they are doing it with contrast thats an interesting experience. They put a canula in your arm and inject the dye which in my case made me have a funny taste in my mouth, go very hot and made me feel like I had wet myself. Goes very quick though and really really is nothing at all to worry about.

I don't really have any advice, having never been through either of those, I just wanted to say that I hope it goes ok, and that even if it's not that nice, it's only temporary and you'll soon be over it and home.

Lie flat and take it as easy as you can once you're done. If people offer to take you places in a wheelchair or generally do for you, then let them. Silly me ended back up in hospital after not resting enough after mine. The actual procedure isn't all that bad, just allow yourself the proper aftercare.

If i'm wrong at least i don't matter.
