Realpolitik, friends. This is how the big boys play in the real world. Sad, but true. Practise senseless acts of beauty.

Partly realpolitik, and also the fact that any nation that attacks Libya risks losing hundreds, even thousands, of their citizens that might be in the country at the moment. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power.

Sarkozy (France), Angela Merkel (Germany), van Rompuy (president of the EU), and the ministers for foreign affiars of both Spain and the Netherlands have publicly called for severe sanctions. Regardless the consequences. Sometimes you just have to stand up for what is right, even when it is too late and too little. Several EU member states have also called for a meeting of the UN safety counsel. Van Rompuy has mentioned a tribunal in The Hague. Several EU countries have made the financial assets of Gadaffi (and his clan) inaccessible since yesterday. Obviously.. there are NO French, Dutch, German, Spanish, or other EU citizens trapped in Lybia.... Ahem. And as an aside... I just heard bout a Dutch military plane that flew in and got not only 30 Dutch citizens, but also 25 citizens of other countries out. Amongst which where at least 4 UK citizens, tyvm. And another aside.. Europe will be the place that has to deal with the consequences of the supposedly enourmous amount of refugees from Libia. Like Italia and Greece.... Sorry, but IMO the US has lost any credibility here. But than I never liked the notion of realpolitik anyway.... Power is about what you can control. Freedom is about what you can unleash. And I think we have a duty to oppose them . Those policies led to the war in Vietnam , the encouragement of genocide in Indonesia , the blocking of any deal in the Israeli / Palestinian dispute etc etc . In President Obamas statement tonight he said all policy options were on the table . Rough translation - if our Energy interests are threatened we're going in . Alone if necessary . Without any reference to the UN . " Yeah . Well I love my cigar but I take it out once in a while " Groucho Marx

Pulitzer Prize winning Nicholas Kristoff is making the same argument in the New York Times. Remember you saw it on IC first!

With the revelation that Gaddafi is clearly 100% bonkers it looks like things might actually get sorted at some point. Have to marvel at the UN capacity for inactivity in the face of mass murder though. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power.

"The Ministry of Defence said that the plans were still at an early stage "... UN inactivity? its been two weeks since the inevitability of all this was apparent.

In fairness to the Ministry of Defence they've probably had to entirely reinvent every plan for every situation since the Tories scrapped the navy and air force. Hell they probably fired the guy that makes the plans. Probably being done by a temp. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power.

When the UN stalling has paid dividends for Gaddafi, looks like he's on the warpath while tens of thousands of his opponents have fled. If he survives this there'll be no getting rid of him. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power.

Well the last week has seen the British humiliated for some sort of comedy special forces mission in Libya. Really smooth moves from a government that can't even successfully charter a plane. It's a shame we can't appoint an interim Prime Minister for those moments when we really need a grown up in charge. Meanwhile:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12699183 I wonder if this bodes as badly for Gaddafi as it did for King George. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. |
