Hi everyone,

Sometimes I think, "it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks", but here goes.....

I am a pro-domme in West London and would like to create a new website using WordPress. As it is, I use an applemac but have very little technical know-how.

I do have an idea of what I want the aesthetics to look like. It's just a problem for me to translate it into reality without the help of someone who knows their way around this sort of stuff and can take me through it step-by-step... creating a professional website by my having a set of tutorials. Naturally I expect to pay for this help. I feel this would be a lot quicker than my struggled along alone and hoping for the best.

And then, by the time my new website is up and running, I will be able to make the changes, text, images etc. and have 100% control, without running off to a web-designer!!!

Please memo me if you can help

Do you just need help creating a theme or do you need help understanding WordPress and the plugins?

If you want a theme writing then you would be best going to one of the professional/gifted amateur theme writers. Just google WordPress theme design and you'll find hundreds.

If you want help understanding how to use wordpress effectively then I can provide some advice for nothing. Memo me if I can help.

Could you copy me in or post your advice on here?

Just the basics of how to get started with something basic on word press would be good :-)

I don't know anything about using Wordpress to create a website but I used Mr Site to do my website (which is still a work in progress).

It's sometimes a bit of a slow, clunky process, eg, some processes take 4 clicks when 1 should suffice. Creating a gallery takes forever... However, it does the job and it's a very simple matter to log on and make changes whenever I want to.

It's possible to embed a Wordpress blog into it using a bit of code. Embedding the Wordpress blog is meant to help it up the ratings.

If you can use a basic word processing package, you should be able to find your way round Mr Site.

Moonfruit is also supposed to be very good but I don't know much about it so can't make a fair comparison with Mr Site.

Thank you for that Lady Toza Scarlet, I am off to feed the squirrels now...... but will look into it when I get back. They are waiting for their monkey nuts..:)

I know Wordpress is one of the more popular content management systems out there but having done some tests with a few clients I find that it's far from intuitive to use and has quite a steep learning curve.

There are some sites (mostly blog-based sites) for which it's perfect but for normal website building I feel it's just too complex for most users to get to grips with. The same is sadly true of it's primary competitors (joomla & drupal). All three are very powerful and have their place but that power comes at the cost of ease of use.

The best compromise I have found is a package called Concrete 5 - it allows full management of the site by the end-user and has the benefit of being largely visual in operation - you edit the pages directly and can see what the site looks like as you go. It also has very powerful version controls so you never need worry about making a mess - get something wrong and you can revert to the previous version of the page with a mouse click.

The main problem will be finding a host for Concrete 5 - as it's less popular that the big three it's not generally offered by a lot of webhosts. It is easy to install if you already have a web server (and the host allows it), there are some hosts around if you Google for them (beware content issues) or feel free to drop me a memo and I may be able to arrange something for you (I run a hosting company).

Good luck!

I use moonfruit also, though not in bdsm sector. Pretty intuitive. Fit for my purpose.

What you decide on using - will depend on what you want to achieve. Do you want fairly static webpages but with lots of functionality, ie users areas, subscriptions. Or are you interested in just purely adding content.

Wordpress is the defacto for blogs. Joomla is used normally for people who want lots more functionality. It has to be said here though - that both these tools overlap in many areas. So as long as your requirements are NOT overly technically - then you can use whichever you feel comfortable with.

With Worpress there are many hundreds of plugins to use, that will help with the look and feel, and will also notify all the major search engines of the content you add.

Joomla has been around longer and so is more mature as a product and has more available plugins. On top of this - you may want to make your blog / website standout from the rest - in which you would want a custom template. Like with all things - there is a steep learning curve - but once mastered (or should that be Mistressed ?) then it becomes easier - and you can concentrate and write good content which people want to read - which in turn - may lead to them wanting your services / products etc.

Hope that helps a little. PantsDown.. just ask if you want to know more

If you're using Apple, why aren't you using iWeb? Couldn't be simpler to knock up a basic website... even my mum can do it :-)

NOOOOO

I'm a mac user, and for home websites iweb is ok... For anything business based it's a nightmare, I tried it, failed, taught myself CSS, HTML etc and did it myself, much much better!

I design websites for people using wordpress, from the template and layout, then provide detailed instructions on how you add your content and edit/remove pages.

I've sent you a memo!
