I was listening to a track an album I hadn't listened to for a number of years yesterday (albums's called 'Patashnik' by Biosphere, track is 'Decryption'). It has a phrase repeated over and over - "So frightened to lose yourself, to lose yourself to the group will" and it struck a chord with me as to some thoughts I'd been having about submission....
A few (well... quite a few) years ago I used to go to raves and the like. One of the blissful parts of the events was psychologically, emotionally, completely becoming one with the crowd - losing your will to the group will. For some people this came about through gubbing a some ecstacy, for some it was entering a trance through the music and for some it was just a natural ability to slip out of themselves. Some people, however, just could never let themselves succumb. Usually to be found looking on from the side with a pint and sad look ontheir faces....
I began to wonder if this "sharing of will" is the same sharing of will which happens in good D/s relationships. When the will and spirit of the players become one - the feeling of being anywhere and everywhere, of being them, them being you - of a third who is both.
In the rave scenario, one gets the feeling of being part of a huge, infinitely complex organism or spirit - a writhing, loving creature with one mind and one purpose. The D/s situation is very similar - for me at least. The feeling of slipping out from yourself - haveing a sharre of your will, but not ownership. A blissful release from being one to being multiple.
The people who couldn't submit to the group will? Were some "Dom" - the DJ of the scene? Perhaps. But some were cleary desperate to join in, to become one with the beast on the dancefloor - but just _couldn't_. It makes me feel terribly sad for them - to so want to lose youself, and find yourself - but being too afraid to put their drink down and join hands with the whirling dervish.....
