Do we know if she (Brooke Magnanti a.k.a. Belle De Jour) is aiming to get it pubished in a peer reviewed journal, and might publishing it (with no peer review) online first affect that?. Cheers, Badg1. | ||

Don't know. Don't know her in person - anyone else?
maybe she's just too keen to get the word out there. I suspect it will still get published just because Lilith report is so significant. For anyone who doesn't know the relevance - Lilith report has informed much policy around adult venues/entertainment/shops etc. Lilith report claims that the adult venues (eg lapdancing) in Camden has led to a rise in attacks against women. It has been much criticised already.. this is a wonderful addition to the outcry. Why is this relevant to BDSM? Statistical reports like this are part of the reason councils shut down adult venues (of which BDSM clubs could be seen as), pro dominants, burlesque dancers, and adult shops, including those which sell BDSM equipment. So it does affect us here directly. De

The paper does say "If a cause-and-effect relationship between the number of lap dancing clubs and the occurrence of rape existed", it doesn't say why London boroughs with similar ethnic make ups, similar household income and different numbers of lap dancing clubs do have a difference in rape rates. It is possible Camden based rapists go to a local lap dancing club then go elsewhere to commit rape, where they won't be recognised. Yeah, I can't find that it's published anywhere. It would certainly give the report some validity in the eyes of the media if it were peer reviewed. I will ask a friend who sits on an urban geographies journal board (which this piece would be suited to) if this has come into their or anyone else they know's hands, and if it hasn't been accepted, why. ETA: having read it more carefully a second time, I think her discussion at the end would need to be a good deal more extensive for journal publication, and her language is a bit dodgy in places. That would be caught by peer review before publication and it would be difficult to dispute the signifiance of the research, so I suppose it's possible this is a first draft? ETA2: I think it might be worth forwarding this to journalists who might have some sympathy for it, though. My suggestion would be Laurie Penny. Railing against the tyranny of 'common sense'. No, I can't find it published either. Her qualifications and other publications are in the area of cancer and toxicology, so I imagine it might be difficult for her to get access to a suitable journal for this sort of study. Maybe a co-author with an extablished reputation in the field would help. "Imagination is more important than knowledge" (Albert Einstein) |
