As a follow up to myself.... At 3 megabits per second, that equates to 375 kilobytes a second, so you can hit your monthly "unlimited" download cap in 1,333 seconds, or 22 fucking minutes... At the time of writing http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/ is 88,598 bytes, so just viewing or refreshing that page 175 times a day (ask yourself how often you reload IC) will use up your allowance.... so it isn't even any fucking use for web browsing. I'm not cynical mate, just experienced.

Like any other tool at my disposal I use my phone to mind fuck. Sending a cheeky text to remind someone Im thinking of them and then wait an hour or two before texting back, knowing full well they are having kittens. I would play on your guilt like a violinist on a Stradivari.

I've set specific ringtones for specific people, that way, depending on who's ringtones goes off I can decided whether I need to answer or not. Sadder still to watch it die than never to have have known it.

I think I'm the owner of the world's most immobile mobile. It never leaves the flat and I hardly ever have it switched on. I turn it on a couple of times a day to see if there's been any calls, but other than that it stays switched off. I only got the thing a dozen or so years ago as it was cheaper than getting BT to put in a phone line. When I finally joined the computer age a couple of years ago I had to have a phone line, but I haven't told anyone the number, so I never ever answer it. Mobile phones are weapons of mass distraction and they fill a need that didn't exist before they were invented. Gawd, I'm a right miserable, anti social, curmudgeonly old git aint I? I may be in the gutter, but I am looking at the bars.

This has often been something I have thought about, as at one point I had 3 mobiles and either a laptop or notepad with me at all times.I even used to place all 3 mobile on the side in the bathroom as I bathed. No one should be that accessible, and no one needs to be!
I am much more nonchalant about it now, I answer when I want, usually it's straight away because I like to be doing lots of things at the same time, or people
But I would say I have always been 'slave' to my mobile(s) mainly due to work and being a workaholic but since I have been stuck at home due to personal circumstance and therefore anyone can always contact me I hate that I feel I don't have the choice to NOT be contactable. So I opt to NOT answer the phone or text messages immediately when I feel like it to gain some control. Although to be fair I have often done this with subs and/or relationships and it annoys the hell out of them because they know i've seen it but 'choose' not to speak/text to them "I'm really sorry you have to die." I don't have a mobile signal at work so never pick up any messages 'til lunchtime or after work. And consequently at weekends I never feel any need to answer immediately.

My phone very rarely rings, as I don't really like talking on the phone much (it's just never been a habit) - if it were to ring and it was an inconvenient time I'd be only too happy to leave it. That's what my delightful answerphone voice is for, no? I was the same back before mobiles when I lived alone with a landline I never answered - my mum ended up buying me an answerphone so she could leave me a message every now and again, bless.
As for texts, I tend to respond fairly quickly, but only when it's convenient - I'm pretty unlikely to interrupt a conversation to do so, and yes, very much feel like it's a request, not a command. No "bear with, bear with" with me. The important thing, which has taken me a while to learn but has been a very valuable lesson, is that you can't interpret other people's actions by your standards. So I might reply pretty quickly - but if it's to a person who I know has a more relaxed attitude to timescales, I'll not fret if the response is 24 hours or more away. But no, I'm not submissive to my phone.

I keep my mobile in the glove box in the car and check it once a day if I remember. Its very basic, can get calls and send text it does not have a camera or any other nonsense. Most of the time it's out of charge, I only have it in case I break down. I do sometimes reply to texts and have been known to answer it if I happen to hear it ring, but for 6 months it was on silent and I hadn't noticed so had lots of missed calls none of which I bothered calling back because if it was more than a day or two old and they had not got back in touch another way it was not important. I feel sorry for all those who are slaves to their mobiles. Cheers Grimly p.s. my landline has call display so I can see who it is and decide if I want to talk. If it's an unknown number or withheld its not going to get answered. I'm not just politically incorrect ….I'm politically incoherent!!! Edited 10 Jan 11, 7:06 PM by Grimly

I am always in control. If I do not wish to take a call, I won't. A text message or email will get responded to at a time of my choosing. The TV stays off unless there's programme I wish to watch (rare - unless it's Rugby or Skiing). If I'm requested to do something I'll consider it. If it's rational or within my power I may do something about it - at a time and place of my selection.
Possibly the onlyt exception is if the police ask me to do something like "Don't drive down the road with the sign 'Achtung, Minen' on it" as there may well be a very good reason for obeying without question Here's a good test to see if you're really in control of your own life. If things go well do you take the credit for it? If things go badly do you seek to blame another Entity (the State/Council/Boss/God etc.) ? If the answer to both questions is "yes" then you're not in control. Only if your answer to the the first is Yes and the second No are you truly in control. I'm a bad, bad boy, and I'm going to steal your love.

Mobile broadband? I use it a lot. It might have a phone number but you're never, ever, going to be able to call me on it. Great advantage is it doesn't matter where in the country I am I'm a bad, bad boy, and I'm going to steal your love. |
