Well, I'm just about to start reading the erotic classic 'Story Of O' by Pauline Reage.

I'll let you know what I think, but has anyone else read it?

I read this book a couple of years ago. I feel slightly wary and nervous of reviewing it as it is such a classic that it has been discussed far more eloquently than I could ! That said , in brief I enjoyed it but was left feeling saddened for her. I also felt that. as Ihave seen this book triumphed as a bible for d/s that it certainly wasn't for me !especially if it meant I would be dumped and eventually lose the entirety of any semblance of freedom !.

I have just finished stacia cane trilogy downside ghosts , a not very intellectual shameless urban fantasy about witches. Not my normal choice of style of writing but I really enjoyed them and am looking forward to her next offering. I am currently polishing off A discovery of witches by Deborah harkness. ( any one noticing a theme ?! ) Not very impressed by her style the dialogues are boring and a tad predictable.

Have ran out of books again , I feel a spree on amazon coming on.

The absence of apostrophes is to get you .. yes .. it is. Grating yet ? :)

Story of O - the film - bored me rigid. I got the impression though that it probably made for a fairly deep analysis of the limits of a certain kind of submission. I'd expect from seeing the film that the book is very well written from the emotional point of view of O.

Trouble is, I couldn't be more bored with chateauxs and pseudo-noble doms, ordered discipline, leather and whips and human beings functioning like tools facilitating some extraneous erotic agenda. Sade was at least contempraneous when he was writing his nonsense.

Now The Piano Teacher on the other hand - that's a film; and it's probably a damn fine book too. Eventually, I'll get around to readin' it. As it is, Houellebecq'a new 'un's just arrived 'n I need to be gettin' onto that.

Currently reading The True Tale of the Monster of Billy Dean by David Almond but finding it hard work as its written in dialect. I have 1Q84 by Murakami sitting on the side but its a beast of a book which is putting me off some what. Anything over 500 pages puts me off - lol!

I have just finished the wonderful The Radleys by Matt Haig: a tale of modern-day vampires trying to settle down in suburban England :-) This book really resonated with me ;-)

Also just finished the equally wonderful Dreaming of Strangers by Matt Thorne: a romance - with a plot of Shakespearean proportions - between a couple of London filmophiles. Sweet and funny and dealing in real emotions.

Moving on to Suite Francaise by Irene Nemirovsky ... with trepidation ... although, everyone says it's great ...

I started Stephen King's 'Under the Dome' yesterday, and I'm nearly 500 pages in already. I don't normally read that quickly. I'm enjoying it. Of course, as there's another 400 pages to go, there's still time for King to lose the plot as he can do in a long book, but it's looking good so far.

Necromancing and cross-posting, oh my!

I've torn through a lot of books this festive season. It's therapeutic.

Reading:

  • Rifter series by Ginn Hale

John opens a letter addressed to his missing roommate and is plunged into an alternative reality. Fantasy series that has top marks on goodreads and thumbs up from my book oracle.

  • The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

Creepy alternative fairy tales where a young teen falls into a strange world, much like our own. Shades of Pan's Labyrinth.

Recently finished:

  • Side Jobs, Small Favours & Turn Coat by Jim Butcher

More of the excellent Harry Dresden series. Harry does a "favour" for Mab, Queen of light and darkness when a prominent member of the Accords is kidnapped, while nursery rhyme characters try to off him in Small Favours. In Turn Coat, Harry tracks down the traitor in the White Court and mourns the death of good people by the hand of a skinwalker. Side Jobs is compilation of short stories that fills the gaps between several novels but not to my satisfaction.

  • Faerie Tale by Raymond E Feist

Think Dan Brown's inspiration meets Stephen King but with it's own creepy "sexuality as a weapon" twist. Where faeries prey on innocents, no-one remembers the attacks and nothing, not wealth nor 80's references will save you.

  • Fire by Kristin Cashore

What's it like to be the beautiful daughter of a beautiful monster, predator and prey? To exude such a pull that men will either adore you slavishy or seek to kill you, the thing they cannot possess? This is a prequel of sorts to Graceling & part of The Seven Kingdoms series. I've read lots of M/M (that's gay to you non-acronym users) romance/erotica, including:

  • Counterpoint by Rachel Haimowitz

Epic fantasy, heavy on sword play, romance and courtship between mortal enemies, a human prince and an elf. Light on erotica despite the exceedingly hot cover, felt a bit like pulling teeth.

  • Blood Claim by Laura Baumbach, Jet Mykles & Angela Fiddler

Very well written fantasy shorts - especially Raven by Angela Fiddler. Fans of fresh takes on vampire fiction should read this. ~M.E~

Such a good book.

I'm currently reading book on Sadhu's which is as much spiritual tourism as travel book. I'm also reading and translating interview transcripts.

He didn't! I enjoyed the whole thing.

I'm roughly halfway through 'Blackout / All Clear' - a 1300 page two volume WW2 time travel story. It's really very good so far.
