Well it started well enough, then there is the unanswered phone call from a rellie, and as the fireworks are going off I've driven 20 miles (thankfully I rarely drink) to a rellies and am busy prying the back door with a tyre lever and torch, waiting for some neighbour to call the police about the burglar.

Get in and the rellie (90) is lying on the floor, looks like he has had a stroke, call 999, paramedic comes around, this is the first non alcohol related incident for her, and the first sober patient, ambulance called, ditto.

Follow the ambulance 20 miles back to hospital, then spend the next 2+ hours doing taxi work because the other rellies are also pissed, and live 25 miles away in the other direction, just back home for a quick coffee and a fag, A&E full of drunks, but calling them drunks is understating the case, alcoholic poisoning is more like it, plod everywhere, people dying on the tables and being resuscitated, waiting for the phone call to tell me to go back and do the taxi runs in reverse again and take all the rellies back home.

I thought it was bad enough being sober in a pub full of drunks, it is fucking awful being sober in an A&E full of drunks.

So a big shout to the paramedics, ambulance crews and A&E staff at the RD&E Hospital, if I had my way the managers and politicians would all be on the street begging, and you lot would be on 50k a piece.

But we reserve the right to get pissed off if we don't get it. That's what makes us so fascinating! And not a little bit scary. Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
