Funnily enough my first ever real-life experience of S&M was witnessing a flogging in Berlin and then my first personal experience of impact play was a flogging.
I really enjoy a flogging no two floggings are the same or for that matter those who dish it out.
The variety of floggers means there's so many different uses from sensual to brutality.

By "flogging" I was referring to a cat'o'nine tails...

A cat o' nine tails is different to a flogger. A flogger will have straight tails, of varying number, width and thickness, whereas a cat will have knotted ends and a fewer number of tails, which are often braided. Although traditionally, a cat was made of unbraided rope, these days, a cat will tend to be leather, like a flogger.
Unlike a cane, where there are a very limited number of strokes. you tend to get hit a lot more times with a flogger. I just tried to work this out and I think that in a lengthy session of very rapid flogging, my play partner might end up taking maybe 4000 strokes. Which is quite a workout for the top. For someone doing it professionally (I've assumed you're talking about a professional Mistress), they would probably get RSI trying that sort of play all the time, so you're more likely to be getting you a much more limited number of harder strokes with a heavier, harsher implement.
A cat will generally hurt more than a flogger. Although that said, heavy rubber floggers hurt like a fuck.
Nothing has the range of sensation available to you that floggers do. So depending on what floggers are used in what combination, what it'll feel like for you could be anywhere between floaty, foreplay, a deep massage or complete agony.

I use floggers and cats, as a general rule, floggers are more 'thuddy', and cats sting. Much of course depends on the skill and intentions of the person behind the flogger.
I have personally never heard of anyone being seriously injured or killed by being flogged, but I guess it could happen. Anything could happen. When I want your opinion, I'll thrash it out of you

I know we're a caring bunch (and funny at times as this thread shows) so I wouldn't knock the warnings and good advice given but it does seem sometimes like the "H&S going up a ladder syndrome" when a person says I wanna climb real high and many say "that could be dangerous". Sure there's a risk with most things, know it, consider it, but if that's what you want to do, go for it.

The OP described flogging. Then he said about a cat o nine tails.
So he switched from a verb to a noun. A cat is indeed a form of flogger. But a VERY SPECIFIC form.
Yes, seamen were "flogged" with a cat o' nine tails. That doesn't mean that being hit with a "flogger" is the same thing.
I've always taken the term "flogging" to mean being hit with a multi-tailed implement. But I'm not a student of the development of language, so someone with a degree in naval history may prove me wrong here. But, for example, Florentining, whilst still a form of flogging, was something specific to Florence - where two floggers were used together. It's still a flogging, but it wasn't using a cat.
There's a good description of a cat o nine tails here, although I've read others. .

One of the most dangerous implements in the wrong hands is a cane. You think about it: a crafted piece of wood designed to inflict pain which in the case of some Singapore canes can leave lasting damage. When I was visiting a domme, who specialised in corpun, she only used one of her lighter canes, as I'd been out of action for a long time, and gave me my first four through my kecks before building up my tolerance to a bare bottomed caning. Still hurt like billy o, but it was far better I met someone who knew what they were doing. |
