Surprises me how the most unconventional people, find it 'intolerable' if you don't comply to standard English in a text message.... it's a txt for god sake, not the written language used in a book or journal.

I dislike textspeak outside text messages, except for an occasional 'lol'.

Trying to read whole sentences of the stuff hurts my eyes and makes my head ache. I certainly tend to interpret its use as unwillingness to make the effort (or spend the time) to write proper sentences - and it often appears lazy and disrespectful to me.

I agree with this- will tolerate it in texts but in memos and e-mails it has no place as far as I'm concerned.

^^^ Exactly. In texts it is tolerable (although I still don't like it to be honest). In emails and memos however, it makes me think (perhaps unfairly) that the sender is lazy, has limited vocabulary, doesn't give a shit and/or is thick. I also think it makes communication less easy, as I have to spend so much time trying to decipher what they have written that I lose interest in conversing with them. It may be my loss, but if someone insists on using text speak when they know I hate it... I just don't chat with them. On the other hand, I am quite relaxed about abbreviations like wtf or btw, and emoticons/smileys.

There's a somebody i'm longing to see, i hope that he turns out to be, someone to watch over me

Using text speak is like saying to the world "I play D & D and have +3 in Twattish".

Rohypnol means never having to say "Would you like another coffee?".

i am currently Domless @ the mo, ok

from the 1s i ave spoken 2 they hav said 2 stop with the text speak.

hmmm why i asked

and they said its lazyness.

me i disagree with that, but do feel text speak does have a place but not when working.

what do you think??

It makes you come across like an disrespectful idiot. In a text message? Sure. in a quick memo between friends that know each other? perhaps. When trying to find a partner it's not too much to ask that you type properly, hell it's forum etiquette to do so.

I don't mind abbreviations and find lol can be helpful if you are letting someone know you are saying something either tongue in cheek or joking.

Text speak I can't abide. Especially when "th" is replaced with "d".

Send me a memo or text in text speak and you are guaranteed to NOT get a reply (no matter who you are)

Indeed although men who are very young can't keep it up very long either for different reasons. I suppose there must be an age range of say 30 - 45 when men can get it up and keep it up without viagra. (I have now probably managed to alienate 100% of suitable men one way or another so I'll go away and shut up...)

It's brilliant when they use it because it sorts out the sheep from the goats so it takes you two seconds to discount another illiterate person. Keep it up.

Keep it up? That's another problem with getting older. Not only do modern fads like txt spk bring out the grumpy in me, but I can't do that as long as I used to either.

I hate text speak but it just seems to be the norm these days. What ever happened to the good old English Language?

Some of you young persons couldn't be bothered to learn it properly, and started coming up with your own alteratives...

When I want your opinion, I'll thrash it out of you
