Saw a fantastic programme about New York and its music scenes of the late 60s,early 70s, Punk, Rap and Disco.
It mentioned Stonewall Riots, sparked by a Drag Queen that threw either her heel or a bottle?.
Then it got onto the fore-runner of punk at CBGB. Velvet Underground,Lou Reed, New York Dolls (Glam plus start of punk) Ramones, Talking heads, Blondie etc plus Avant Garde Pop Artist/Film Maker Andy Warhol. Then we have Studio 54.
The time was one of Expression, hedonistic drugs but also a Contingent of TGs, Candy Darling being the famous.Lou Reeds "Walk on the wild side" starts off about a TG.
Today there is a singer/band (with Lou Reed influence) called Antony and the Johnsons who is TG when sings sometimes and has Candy Darling on one of the Album covers (Very Beautiful).
I dont prtend to be an expert of this era but I do have a sense of pride with the TG side of involvement and would love to know more.
Mainly M2F but a lot of music videos has TG than people realise.
Queen "I want to break free" would be classed as the first and did cause a little stir at the time (the drummer looks convincing as a schoolgirl). Gossip did a video of a TrannyBoi and TrannyGurl getting together on the dance floor. Chumbawumba "I get knocked down" has a TG in its video. To name a few
Are there any Favourites that the Group has, or suprises that they have come across.
Any thoughts would love to hear.
regards, michelle xx

I believe the lead singer of Rachel Stamp (David Ryder-Prangley, AKA Dolly Dollar) might be somewhere around the trans umbrella or have associations with the trans community, from having seen him billed on some trans/arts community fundraiser event (not to mention the fact that he's pretty clearly quite gender variant). They were a glam punk band in the UK starting in the late '90s and winding up their act in the mid noughties. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CK0-xypYZOc&featu... (musically they're better live, and there's more playing with voice gender, but the live vids are shitely lit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPWAoV6a1Ik&featu... ) They were my heroes as a teenager. Alas, they couldn't hold down a recording contract very long as a time, and seemed to keep getting booked supporting bands like Korn (where they got bottled by homophobic fans for looking too queer) if the stories I heard were true. Amazing live act and have a quick reformation gig coming up soon though. There are probably other more current trans musicians within today's crop of mainstream artists that I'm not aware of because I've transitioned from young glam punk queen to old nostalgic fart (and I don't know how much a lot of the "trans bands" like Oestrogenix are actually gigging-for-a-living in the wider music world instead of just doing the trans events circuit when things turn up). moo Edited 12 Dec 10, 6:39 PM by foibey

I always sensed a note of sadness about Walk on the Wild Side, although that's probably me reading that into it given the fairly miserable state Candy Darling lived and died in. For me it sounds more about queer survival on a fairly bitter end of mental health, drug addiction, and living on fringes of society than hedonism. 4 out of the 5 people mentioned in the song were trans. There's something slightly creepy about Warhol's position in the whole thing (as a curator of a "scene", but also as someone who's also definitely profiting from having all these outré/outcast and "exotic" friends that he generously turns into "superstars" surrounding him and populating his little nightclub scene). Sad egotistical bollocks and weirdness. As far as random things featuring trans people, there's Faith No More - Easy (which features Mike Patton croning "easy like sunday morning" to a hotel room full of queens for no particular reason, possibly declaring what the lead singer likes to do of a sunday morning) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1WAMNIunKc Swedish band The (International) Noise Conspiracy have done a number of songs about gender (including gender variance/queerness) but I don't know anything about their membership. The (international) Noise Conspiracy - Smash it Up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyjmCg_VMU0&featu... Surprisingly I can't think of much more, really. Random Trans Fact: The "Johnson" referred to in Antony and the Johnsons' bandname refers to Marsha P Johnson, a veteran of the Stonewall riots and New York trans community organiser (now deceased, found dead in the Hudson river 1996) moo Edited 12 Dec 10, 7:16 PM by foibey

Considering that Lou Reed is not transgendered and that Walk on the Wild Side is only sited by a few fetish minded trans people,is not a representative example of trans people and music. As for the other band you mentioned well that is questionable about their line up. http://empressm7.uboot.com/ Vampire pro/lifestyle ts dom and switch. I mentioned it because maidmichelle did. Cited by fetish trans people? It's a little piece of history about trans and queer folks migrating to New York as a safe haven. Doesn't matter that Lou Reed isn't trans. He's writing about his experiences of the NY queer scene (which significantly includes lots of trans people). Why are you having random problems with my mentioning of 3 other bands. Rachel Stamp have a trans/gender-variant person (or more) in. Faith No More had a video with them and a bunch of queens in (like I said) and it seemed fair game to bring it up due to YOUR mentioning the Queen "I want to break free" video. And The (international) Noise Conspiracy have a few songs about gender dysphoria, one in particular about wanting to break away from binary gender and body hatred (although I couldn't find a video of the song in question so I chucked up a different video instead). Why do people have to make assumptions about the trans status of people in bands anyway? Isn't that just ignorant rubbish? How do people know what (paparazzi free) band members do in their private lives to judge whether they're trans enough to sing about trans stuff? And the original post was about tg influence in the music scene! Anyway, since last night I remembered All The Pretty Horses (who play on the goth scene years back) http://www.venusdemars.com/prettyindex.html Also a few people over State-side at the Riot Folk! collective (http://www.riotfolk.org) are trans or genderqueer, although they don't all make a big deal out of it. A couple of them have specific songs about gender stuff but mostly it's anarchist/punky acoustic stuff. Will update when I can think of more. moo Edited 13 Dec 10, 9:08 AM by foibey

Who did the song "Lola". Think there is a TV club of the same name around soho. Excellent listings Foibey. Never knew about Antony and Johnstones till i saw the programme mentioned and has sang on Jools Hollands music programme on BBC2.Thanks for the history of the name.Candy Darling (i'm not patronising) is on one of the Album covers and She looks fantastic. It does seem very sad history of her demise. Foo Fighters like to dress in their video's and did anyone notice the TV in the Chumbawumba "I get knocked down" video. I only picked it up when i relised She looked like me. regards, michelle Edited 13 Dec 10, 11:19 AM by maidmichellepetite
