For some time I have been puzzled by the apparent fixation that some appear to have with 'alpha' types. I have no issue with it, in principle. I know what constitutes an alpha male, but I wonder if they do?

The thing is, I get the impression (which might, of course, be entirely wrong) that when people use the term 'alpha', they are using it as a kind of shorthand for a certain type of man, which is not what most would recognise as an 'alpha male'. Let me explain.

An alpha male is one to whom other males look up and defer, who has qualities that set him apart from the pack, and make him a natural leader. In some ways, that is the type of person they are seeking. But an alpha male may be sub or dom – their alpha qualities may only exist is vanilla life. Whereas I suspect that when the term is used, it is often used to mean someone who is wealthy, has a certain type of education and background, drives a certain type of car and so on. These qualities are as likely to point to an estate agent (not that there is anything implicitly wrong with that) as to a captain of industry.

A dominant male might be one to whom all males would defer, but within a small community, there can only be a limited number of alphas – otherwise it will lead to an internecine struggle, tearing the community apart.

If what is sought is a wealthy man, with the 'right' background, then why not say so?

As far as I am concerned an Alpha male could as well be a dustman as he could a high flying businessman. It has nothing to do with money, possessions or status.

If a man is at the top of the money chain that may make him more influential and I think that is where the confusion lays.

Personally I tend to avoid those that I think of as 'alpha'. Most of the alpha men I have known have been selfish, ruthless, pushy knobs.

I am very encouraged by these responses and I thank you for them.

Alan Bond, from Ealing, famously backed the Australian team who took The America´s cup from U S of A, prior to this he said, " a man´s wealth is measured by the amount he can borrow", shortly afterwars he was imprisoned for, I think, fraud. Outward signs of wealth often deceive the gullible, or at least those who want to believe.
