Empress Elizabeth of Russia was a woman who truly knew how to achieve power, rule an expanding empire, maintain a string of lovers and secure the future of the Romanov dynasty. Meanwhile, she ran a lavish court, with very strict dress codes for all of her courtiers and regularly organised what are described as "sumptuous" masquerades. I am sure that she was as demanding of her lovers in private as she was of her court in public. It must have been wonderful to be a part of such a fascinating period of history, the perfect backcloth for a man who wanted to show devotion and obedience to a beautiful woman.

Captive of a Bedouin sheik, living in luxurious tent, in the middle of the the desert, late 19th or early 20th century.. Power is about what you can control. Freedom is about what you can unleash. (Harriet Rubin) Edited 4 Nov 10, 7:14 AM by othyim

The Georgian/Regency era - before the victorian hypocrisy kicked in - when married women had lovers and it was ok to be intelligent and have salons and good sex was a normal thing for many couples. Conversely, the victorian era, after the hypocrisy kicked in, because the subjegation of women was stifling and the normas of behaviour were difficult to live up to - and you got beaten when you didn't. Having said that, I wouldn't swap 2010 for hot water, central heating, decent medical care and proper french cheese from Waitrose. And I'd want to be rich-ish. Unless I was being a wench - but then I don't fancy the clap! Rapunzel - all round bad girl....
