I think I might have found my disorder. (4)

Let's face it, everyone in the world probably has a disorder or ten and it's just a matter of working them out and putting a name to them or finding the already existing name.

So I think I might have AvPD. Which sounds really cool as it stands for Alien Vs Predator Disorder. Although it isn't actually Aliens Vs Predator Disorder, which is kind of good as the films were ok, but not great and the original computer game wasn't that good and I've not tried the new one. So no I'm not addicted to Aliens battling Predators, least not yet, maybe if they made a film that didn't feature humans then things could get interesting.

Anyway I digress. AvPD is actually Avoidant personality disorder* and I seem to tick a fair few boxes on the list.

Anyway, last week at work the subject of Autism came up and it wasn't actually directed at me, but at a colleague, who isn't autistic but like me she's probably in the no-man's land between autistic and not. But the thing is it's what makes us good at our jobs, or at least the technical side. I'll admit I'm quite anal about something and I probably have a touch of OCD in there, especially when it comes to emptying recycle bins in Windows, which I have to stop myself from doing at times.

So anyway, I'd taken one of them "on-line" autism tests a whole bunch of months ago and then a friend on Facebook used one yesterday and got 15, which is normal average human female. So I thought I'd take the test and see what I came up with. Apparently I'm two normal average women, or I got 30 which is 2 short of the autism area. But it's one of them crap tests where it asks you if you strongly agree or slightly agree or the disagree equivalents. And so there are always questions which you both agree and disagree with depending on the circumstances. But anyway I'm not taking that test as a professional opinion. Not that it matters as I know I'm slightly that way anyway.

So today while I had a little time I had a quick look on-line to see if there were any other tests that were a bit more finely tuned. But instead I found a site that pointed me in the direction of AvPD as the name sounded like something that suited me and so it seems.

Have to say thought that the extreme, hyper, severe, highly, etc. categories, in the above link, don't really suit me as I'm more mild, slightly or somewhat. Although I'm not sure what actually constitutes severe, extreme or mild or whatever.

And I'm not sure about the criticism part of thing either as let's face it I'm perfect, there isn't anything to criticise. Ok maybe not, but I don't really get that much criticism, but then I probably don't expose myself to much opportunity for it. And I do have that's self loathing and low self esteem thing so if people do criticise me then they probably aren't telling me anything I don't already know.

A lot of the other symptoms though I can quite happily tick the boxes on, so I guess this is the one for me.

So what does this mean for me and my life. Well bugger all really, it's not going to change anything, it just means I have a name to call my social ineptitude. And who knows, there might be another disorder out there that fits me better.

* Yes I know it's wikipedia but I don't give a crap. I didn't find the details on there originally, but thought it would do as a basic guide to what it is. If you want a better site, there's a whole Internet out there for you to find another.

A popular note in doctors records refers to GOK Syndrome. GOK?... God Only Knows. It means they know something is wrong but can't find a reason.

I'm finding it works just a well with computer repairs and the GOK circuit/board /card is malfunctioning is a useful response. :-D

Is it anything like Pathological Demand Avoidance? I don't know if there is any published adult information on it now - a few years ago there wasnt, as they had just subcategorised from the AS grouping......

I guess it's similar in that it's one of those kinds of disorders, but the symptoms are different. People with PDA seem to be able to handle social situations better and have control issues.

While I do have some control issues they aren't in the same category. AvPD tends to be more to do with self esteem and social problems and such like
