Shock! Horror! (7)

I've actually had what some people might consider a life, this weekend.

Ok it's more of a shock than any horror and in fact there wasn't that much horror involved.

Anyway, this weekend a mate is heading off down south to Uni and so we were going to have a bit of a weekend of something before he departed for foreign climes (well Cambridge). However bugger all got organised. Some of the times we were supposed to be getting together when we could have sorted something kept getting screwed up due to work and illness and stuff. And on the whole nothing really developed.

So the other day I got a text message asking me if I was going to the Comedy Club? Then another text saying they needed to order the tickets. Now having no warning, clue or information about any of this I thought Ugh! And then on checking my bank account later I thought ARGGGHHH!!! It turns out I'm actually pretty skint at the moment. So I replied and said I knew nothing about it and I was flat broke, which described one of the tyres on my car that morning.

Then on Friday evening, I got a call asking if I wanted to go to the club as one of me friends had pulled out due to his arse going like the Japanese train system (very regularly without fail). So the ticket was paid for and would go to waste otherwise. So I thought, why not and got some details before confirming though. I like details, as I generally have confidence problems going somewhere new and if I have some details then at least I have something to get me head around, I know some of what I'm dealing with. Also due to the fact that nearest train station is over the river and a pain to get to and from on public transport late at night, or at least I think it is as I don't use public transport and as such have no bloody clue what goes where and what to catch, I decided to drive.

So picked me friends up and headed to the Rawhide Comedy Club which is downstairs at the Liverpool Royal Court (entrance via the booking office). It cost an extra £10 on the ticket for food, with some things having a bit extra on top, which you pay when ordering, but it was good food, although the steak didn't last long.

Now I've never been to a live comedy show before unless you count being taken to see the Grumbleweeds when I was 10, by my parents while we were on holiday down south. And I can't actually remember anything from it other than them doing a sketch involving Sooty and then some child in the audience shouting out occasionally during the show "Where's Sooty?".

I'm not usually one for laughing out loud (that's that lol thing, for people who have used it so much they don't recall the meaning) that often and so I was surprised to find meself doing it an awful lot.

The first act was Sean Percival, from Dudley. He started off a little slow but warmed up quickly and had us all laughing our heads off. So if you do see him on the bill, you won't be sorry. And when he mentioned Brian Harvey, I just laughed because I knew my mate would love this bit. Whenever he's feeling down he just thinks of Brian Harvey and it cheers him right up, especially him managing to drive over his own head.

Next was Dave Twentyman, from St Helens. He was probably the weakest as he never quite got into his stride. It was like he kept forgetting where he was going. Still he did make us laugh, his act just wasn't flowing that great is all.

The headliner was Steve Gribbin, and he was great. He's from Liverpool and it felt like he'd been doing comedy for years and had his act sorted. He's also has music in his act with the odd comedy song or couple of lines.

However the best comedian of the night who kind of blew everyone away was Jonathan Mayor from Manchester (some of you might know of him), who was the Compere. He was brilliant. He did the interacting with the audience and he was very quick and funny. So if you ever get the chance to see him then go, you won't be sorry.

Have to say I'd recommend a night out there. The staff were great, even the manager comes round the tables introducing himself and giving a friendly reminder to turn off phones during the acts and to fill out the forms for the free prize draw for some tickets to one of the Royal Courts shows. Turns out a lady from Ireland won them, so not so cheap a night out for her then. I think my future will hold a few more trips there, although I don't think I'd go as regularly as some of my friends would, once every couple of months would be good.

It could actually be a good night out for a Munch to arrange, as once the compere finds out yer a BDSM group they should be able to come up with loads of material for the night.

Anyway, that wasn't all I got up to this weekend. We had a poker night last night as well. Although a few didn't turn up there were still 7 of us and we had a great night. Although this is where the horror comes in. I did lose £15 as I maintained my now unbroken record of coming 4th. I think I've managed that for 6 straight games now and we only played 3 last night. I think next time I should try and focus on the game a bit more as I tend to just relax and let the back of my mind take over and while it does a great job at times it also tends to relax and not make the effort occasionally.

So I do occasionally have one of them life things. Although having said that, I can't really remember the last time I actually went out to something other than a friends or the cinema by myself, before this weekend.

Well I was driving both times so was on the diet coke. Although they do pitchers of beer at the comedy club and I've never been involved with a pitcher, which is one of my few goals in life.

Stupid really, I often travel to the Comedy club in Manchester by Deansgate and never think to check the Rawhide comedy club...sounds like a good venue.

As you say, not a bad idea for a munch / group night out either ;-)

Well there seem to be 3 comedy clubs in Liverpool.

Comedy Central under the Blue Bar at Albert Dock.

And Laughterhouse, which seems to have a few venues.

Oh and cos Rawhide is in the basement of the Royal Court, which is a listed building, they don't have disabled access as of yet.
