I dont support the army in iraq or afghanistan but i still pay for it. i have never used a social worker in my life but i still pay for them. need i go on? that is one of the silliest arguments. we all pay for things we don't use of have no interest in every day of our lives, its called society.

Gary

That's ridiculous, those things *are* for society, the pope visiting isn't. We should not have to pay for it.

And if there was a thread on whether we should be in Afghanistan then I for one would also be saying its a waste of our money, as I have been for several years.

No you are right there is a lot of things our money is spent on that it perhaps shouldn't be but does that mean we have to shut up and take it?

In this age of mass communication, do you really think that people are living a delusion? I don't know anything about you but i think that blinkers do not become a free thinker.

Absolutely right. It isn't often anyone mentions Hume nowadays, one of the greatest.

I am half Catholic and half Jewish by birth. I was brought up as a Methodist. Yes, I have religious issues. :-)

The initial comments and thrust of this thread appears to be anti Pope visit. A shame in many respects. We often criticise the outside world when they make uninformed comment on our lifestyle, now we are commenting in an uninformed manner on the visit of an old man with a position greatly respected by millions of people in this country and abroad.

I happen to have issues with this particular Pope but I am very pleased for the people who will gain great comfort and moral sustenance from his visit.

A little bit of tolerance and humility from doms and subs would not be a bad thing at times.

Gary

I take issue with this Pope. I'm not in any way religious, but I would've welcomed John Paul II with open arms. Benedict XVI can kiss my arse.

In the first case I despised the office while respecting the man. The current incumbent isn't worthy of my respect.

I'm afraid that you are the one being ridiculous because, if we follow your reasoning, we have to draw the line as to what is society (and I happen to think that millions of Catholics are society). I'll start it off, there are only about 300 cases of male breast cancer in the UK each year, I propose to stop the massive waste of money that goes into breast cancer treatment.

That's the trouble with living in a liberal democracy, other people's views and feelings are given as much respect as yours.

Mass communication doesn't negate delusion or stupidity. Often makes it worse.

Maybe the pope's cautioning against the temptations of modern debauchery are brought on by the prospect of many wanting to get bloto at the the thought of all the money wasted on our neo colonial adventures in Afghanistan & Iraq.

Mayby when the British empire was on the edge of collapse we should have done what the Romans did in the same position...invent a religion to rule the world with.

Albeit if religion is the opium of the people the church of England is the aspirin of the people.

I have to agree though I accept that others have a very different view and that is what this thread is about.
