It is sometimes genuinely hard for non-kinkers to understand what is going on on the surface is NOT what is going on underneath. I have read a Kink feminist who before she descovered her kink side was invoved in violent disruption of a store selling bdsm images. She thought they were about hating women, which I am quite sure they are not.

>>>>It is an easy mistake to make<<<<<

I have some media training and would suggest that in contact with the media we stress the sexual play aspect and market ourselves as people who are essentially involved in games and role playing. Everyone can identify with that and see then that what we do is just a more elaborate version of something that is present in their own lives.

Talk about handcuffs and blindfolds - everyone finds these sexy. When it comes to pain - everyone finds spanking and biting sexy - talk about that. Then if you need to relate it to more intense BDSM activity so that viewers or readers start out understanding the context.

Sad if you want to do newspaper stories find hot looking people (sad but true) or an ordinary looking stable couple (not necessarily hetro) and establish that ordinary peole can have extraordinary personal lives.

The press couldn't give a toss about fuckwit non-entities like me.

But, if I ever have to deal with them, I'll remember this thread.

^^^^ This is probably a facetious comment.

There's the old analogy:-

You see a group of kids playing "Cops and Robbers", what do you do?

Do you have half of them arrested for impersonating police officers, and the other half arrested for their obvious criminal inclinations?

No, it's PLAY - and most people of all inclinations will understand that. Yet, for some obscure reason, many people seem utterly incapable of understanding the VERY SAME CONCEPT when it's adults and the "game" is sexual.

FEMALE, BONDAGE-FRIENDLY MODEL SOUGHT. I am seeking to update my "How To" shibari bondage pictures (see my profile pics, the clothed blonde tied in red and black) with a model more "enthusiastic" about BDSM, and who is happy to be photographed nude. MEMO ME if this is you.

Useful thread - I'm actually doing some interviews myself in the next week or two off the back of a book I'm involved with, and despite (or perhaps because!) of being a journo myself I'm a little bit terrified by it.

Deep breaths and thinking things through before answering I guess is the way forward!

Thanks for the advice

some feedback after a few articles have been printed about nimhneach fetish night in irish papers.

1. research your journalist before you consent to interview. Find out what other articles they've got in print and what slant they've given to issues you know about. Surprisingly (or not) how the final article comes across after re writes and the editor depends on how much empathy your journalist has for the subject. Ask about their background in reporting similar issues.

Furthermore, a journalist can also freelance, so they are not working for any publication, just digging about.

2. Discuss what you're planning to cover. Ask for a list of questions that they might like to have answered beforehand. It also provides a loose schedule as usually a conversation wanders. It also provides a conversation termination condition.

3. Meet in a public place.

4. For any pictures, explictly allow permission to use the photographs, but retain copyright. you dont want them to become stock photos.

Discussion: Someone told me once that media tends to the nearest cliché. Sad but true. But really, you want to be speaking (through the article) to those who might "get it".

No, you arrest the parents who took photos that might incite or portray violent acts and who are probably therefore paedophilliacs.
