DSM V (17)

This post is on the BDSM Activism web board.

For those who don't know.... "The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is published by the American Psychiatric Association and provides a common language and standard criteria for the classification of mental disorders. It is used in the United States and in varying degrees around the world, by clinicians, researchers, psychiatric drug regulation agencies, health insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies and policy makers." Wikipedia

Realise I've probably put a post on weblog and it should have been on here.... DSM V is being edited at the moment and includes some interesting changes... Have a look at my weblog and there is a link there. It appears in summary that we are now described as merely "non-normative" in our behaviour (as long as it is causing no harm and distress either to ourself or to non-consenting others).

ETA Explanation of the DSM...

What makes you think the DSM has anything to do with diagnostic practices? It is worldwide agreement by people from various nations with different cultural backgrounds detailing what the consensus finds acceptable. Much the same way as the Kyoto Agreement is what countries are prepared to do, not what should be done.

You know damn well that many health professionals refer to the DSM.

It's validity is another topic.

This is good news. Many thanks to the OP.

Thank you for making my point so eloquently for me. Exactly! It demonstrates that the consensus amongst the most respected people who advise on diagnosis of psycho-pathological disorders, is that those of us with a sexual kink are now no longer in need of treatment (with the caveat as stated). Therefore, as one of the most "respected" publications in its field it probably means that this indicates a shift in perception of us in the mental health field. It is not policy, merely guidance. But guidance that in that particular field has significant weight.

Oooh! That is good news.

I could go on all day about the hypocritical, judgemental, stigmatising nonsense that constitutes psychiatry and the 'mental health' profession, but ultimately, its impact worldwide means that this is very good news.

Now, if someone could point me in the direction of 'normal' and explain to me what the hell it is and why it is, in any way, shape or form, important to anyone then that'd be grand :-D

A step in the right direction nonetheless.

Thank you for posting it, this has been expected for some time but it will be great to finally see it in print. This is a document that health professionals consider vitally important in aiding diagnosis.

What is "normal" ? Self-explanatory - "adhering to norms" (quis custodiet ipsos custodes?)of course, i.e. democratic majority vanilla....but to be that is their kink and TKIOK. The snake swallows its tail, and twists Moebiusly.Selah.

Perhaps it is nice to know, that all the Scandinavian countries have denounced the validity of some of the paraphilia as described in the ICD 10 for some time now.

Should point out though it won't be published till 2013. And let's hope the mental health act is ammended accordingly as it's the act that can have a masochist sectioned not the dsm

I expect it will be circulated in confidential draft for peer review = leaked, though.

Had a real look at it now and perhaps the most important part is not that we are classed as merely non-normative but that 1) to be classed as having a paraphillia such as masochism etc is no longer a psyciatric disorder, but the paraphillia must be causing distress of some kind and it is this distress that results in a disorder being diagnosed. So if your happy with your paraphillia your not suffering from a disorder.

2) where someone involves a non-consenting person in their paraphillia then they can be classified as having a disorder (only applies to certain catagories though such as sadasim, exhibitionism etc). It's great to see that consent is finally being recognised (now we just need the courts to follow suit!!)
