Noticed this article pop on my Twitter feed just now. http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20727754.3... Of the eight deaths observed, only two were suicide, the other SIX were the result of auto erotic activities gone wrong. It was interesting and rather macabre to notice that death can took anything from between 62 seconds and 7 mins 31 secs. Does anyone have access to that particular Journal to see how relevant this is to Activism now or in the future? New Scientist? It's a pretty eclectic mix of stuff but it's popular news skimmed off the top of science. I like reading it, but you'd go six months between copies that had anything useful for BDSM activist in it. And a lot of newspapers skim NS for stories that might appeal to the public. So you get much of the useful stuff in the news anyway. I can look it over and forward anything helpful if I see it. ^^^^ This is probably a facetious comment. | ||

I've found the article referenced in New Scientist but can't see the full text despite using my Athens registration. I've downloaded an earlier article relating to the same subject and there are a couple more too. Here's an extract from "Agonal Sequences in Four Filmed Hangings: Analysis of Respiratory and Movement Responses to Asphyxia by Hanging": "In the first recording, presented in a previous paper (1), a man recorded his suicide with a video camera. He tied his neck with a padded rope fixed on the rail system on an electric garage door and used the remote control to close the door, therefore hanging himself. His feet were fixed in ski boots, tied with chains to a metal platform. In the second recording, a man masked with woman'sunderwear hanged himself in his garage, using a traditional hangman's noose made out of thick rope. A large white sheet was spread on the back wall. He hanged himself from a standing position, his knees slightly bent and his feet touching the floor. In the third recording, a man dressed in a cowboy costume hanged himself in a basement trap by letting go of the nearby ladder (free hanging). The last recording was of a suicide in custody, filmed by a surveillance camera. The victim was kneeling on the ground, the hanging liga- ture tied to the cell bars adjacent to the decedent." | ||

Sadly, Athens only allows you access to the texts that your university pays for - it's not a free-for-all. And yes, I too discovered this when I wanted to read a journal that wasn't paid for by our university  Thanks, Badspyro

I have access to that particular journal. The article is not making any judgement about auto-erotic asphyxiation. Their subject of interest is the physical and neurological processes, e.g. on respiration, loss of consciousness etc. Not a very pleasant article to read so I've only skimmed it.
