Hypothetical situation advice needed... If a person is being threatened or bullied via the internet a non bdsm thing, but to take further action the police would need access to the pc which does have BDSM images on but even on clearing it all out it still can be found, would you continue just to stop the harassment or would you put up with it just so that your private life stays private... Oh am talking serious threats to family of a physical nature which would possibly be carried out... Don't make them a priority, when they only make you an option...

I would go to the police and explain everything. Even if you have ever had what are now illegal images under the silly law that was brought out last year, if you've made every attempt at deleting them, you shouldn't get in trouble yourself. Lots of BDSM pictures are not illegal and the fact you like your sexytime a particular way should not affect the way the police deal with your concerns. I've not had first hand experience of this and so of course this is what *should* happen. I can't see why the police would act differently, but people may have different experiences. Hope it all clears up. m, x I am a bad person

So sorry to hear you are being harassed. Most BDSM porn is not illegal so you may not have anything to worry about - I expect you'll be ok to put your safety first and call the police. Gimme a call i will try and help or find someone to help (will memo my number in case you haven't still got it). Probably not a good idea to say anything else about your computer here. De

If you've deleted it, I would hope it's enough (I would hope they're far less likely to be doing data recovery?) IANAL. You may also be interested in encryption programs like http://www.truecrypt.org/ . (Again, not a perfect defence as the police can force you to hand over encryption keys/passwords, but in this case they're not suspecting you of a crime, and it means they won't see the images in the first place.)

I think you have a responsibility to ensure your folks are safe even if the above were not true...your potential pride and embarrassment are an insignificant price to pay, frankly. But you needn't worry too much about that anyway: The police are not investigating you so they will not be running data recovery programs or forensics on your hard-drive (which is hellish expensive and time consuming)just to catch you out at something a bit kinky... Just back-up your beloved files to CD or something and delete them. You can also use some free-ware deletion programs to "REALLY" delete them: much more than enough to prevent nosey-parker behaviour even from someone computer-savvy. Clear your browsing history, cookies and temp files too, and make the call.

if you are getting threatening email ect, then if you involved the police they would only be interested in the threats made, you could always use a laptop or another computer to show the police the threats

The police would have no cause or indeed any right to run data recovery on your computer. But why not invest in an external HDD and download a copy of fileshredder at www.fileshredder.org then transfer your personal files to the HDD, do a defrag then run fileshredder on the remaining free space on your computer. Then bury the swine doing the harrassing.

Yes. This has priority. Are emails the evidence/proof ? If so, is your email webhosted (eg hotmail etc) or actually on your pc ? If webhosted, go to a police station and log on there. Maybe take a printed version along to start with, if you have access to a printer. If only on your pc, then deleting images should be sufficient. Print off evidential email(s), as before. Also print off the normally hidden headers, as they show the routing (ask if this is unclear). Armed with printed copies, assuming you know the source of the threats, and are prepared to make a statement, the police may not need to visit your home.

When this happened to me printed versions of emails were enough. Mel xXx

Now I'm confused.
So this is Facebook or similar ? Did you take a sceenshot before they were deleted ? Your OP said "to take further action the police would need access to the pc which does have BDSM images on." Why ? What would they need access for now ?
Um. Surely the idea is to prevent any threat being carried out ?
Worrying. Starting to put thought into deed. Sounds like it is worth doing something sooner than later. Depending on the threat.
Glad to hear that. Good luck.
