Forgive my ignorance here, but I am intrigued. Does anyone know of any laws that are comparable to the Extreme Porn Law that operate in any other 'westernised' country? (I say 'westernised' to include countries that have similar cultural beliefs to ours when it comes to sex, and exclude, for example, countries where homosexuality is an offense etc. Possibly I didn't use the right word but I couldn't think how to phrase it.). Do they work in a similar way to ours? Are there any significant protests/campaigns against them? Is our law part of a worldwide trend, or is our political/cultural viewpoint on the matter ridiculous on a global scale?

I've not heard of any "western" countries that criminalise possession of adult porn, though I may be wrong. When the Government decided something must be wrong, back in 2004, it first tried to seek global cooperation with countries like the US to shut down such sites: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/3515797.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/3529385.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/berkshire/354... http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2004/mar/09... Evidently this failed, and a year later we got the proposal of the far more draconian law on possession. In the US, even production and distribution of sites like "necrobabes" seem to be legal, never mind possession. During support of the law, I recall some people talked about porn from European countries. (Clare McGlynn suggested on Radio 4's Woman's Hour that we should at least get cooperation within the EU, which would be okay because the EU tells us what nets we can use for fishing, confirming the idea that there are no similar laws elsewhere in the EU.) So I don't think it was something that had already been done in other countries. I've also not heard of any other countries planning to change the law on "extreme" material since (well, unless we count Scotland!), though I may simply be unaware of this.
