Wikileaks - Julian Assange stuff (3)

Not sure if any of you follow this, but late last night sweden charged the owner and founder of wikileaks, Julian Assange with one count of rape and one count of molestation.

I found this to sound a bit convenient and dodgy, considering what wikileaks have been up to lately.

Incase any of you are wondering, All charges have now been dropped against Julian, Interesting that...

Sweden generally speaking doesn't really get involved in much politically, remaining neutral...

I'm also confused by Expressen's report on this, as generally anyone arrested in Sweden is protected by laws of anonymity. There are an awful lot of reports of "the 41 yo man" being arrested for whatever...

Following the reports, he was arrested in his absence under suspicion of rape and molestation. Apparently 2 women between the ages of 20 and 30 went to a police station and told the police about "what happened". They are however apparently afraid for their lives and refusing to make a formal complaint. Apparently they know each other, though it's reported that they met him separately.

Another report covers statements by one of the women. She is in her 30s and states that what began as consensual relations changed through the night and became assault. She is however adamant that they are NOT afraid for their lives, and that Assange is not violent.

The suspicion of rape has been quashed, he remains under suspicion of the lesser charge of molestation/assault (hard to translate directly), though not currently arrested in his absence. This means he no longer needs to give himself up to the authorities, but he'll no doubt be interviewed at some stage.

Expressen isn't necessarily the best news source, so I checked Svenska Dagbladet, which is at least a broadsheet, and they're essentially reporting the same thing. Much of the quoting is from Expressen however.

It was literally nothing. The first time I heard it they said he had been charged, which would be quite important, but the story now is that it's an absolutely nothing allegation, they have not arrested him, they don't intend to and there have been no charges brought.

Frankly I didn't believe it when I heard it, because it just sounded completely ridiculous for all sorts of reasons, and I'm glad the story has died off within a couple of hours.

Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: Why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: Why not marry safe science if you love it so much.

... and funny how all of a sudden these charges have reappeared now!
