I like some fabrics especially black which is more convincing than some of the frankly only dark grey papers

Interestingly I actually find black paper the easiest colour to use! Just, well, don't light it... Problem with fabric is, as well as wrinkles on the backdrop, you get wrinkles around the feet when you've shooting something full length or where the subject is crouched, lying etc. Paper and vinyl don't wrinkle in this way, and like I said black is easy to obtain you just don't light it. To be honest, when I'm not at my mates studio, I use the painted white wall in my flat for black backdrop! It's already there and freeeeeeeee!

Sometimes you may want to have a different background, exposed brick , painted brick , metal shutters? depends on what you want but free is always best "Litany, a poncy show-off with wit, a camera, and his own teeth *swoon*"

For the last 25 yrs I've been using a piece of 12' long 1" dowel.
I screwed a couple of hooks into the ceiling, being careful to find the joists, then use a pulley system with a cleate from a ships chandlers on the wall. You gotta keep pushing the edges.

hmm ... seemingly every 'simple' question just seems to spawn more questions ! So fabric will be pants unless out of focus ? Well at least that solves my frustration of the last 500 shots. (anyone want a white backdrop going cheap ?) Vinyl is coming in at just under £100, which whilst affordable, I'll avoid if possible at this early stage. Plenty of other goodies shouting out for that cash ! Originaly I'd thought of Miss Felicity's ready-made solution of a painted wall. Only problem there, is the skirting and carpet ruining the bottom of frame. So, I'm now thinking a small platform to provide a false floor, hiding the carpet/skirting. Anyone experience of such a settup ?

Why not just get the floor in the shot? This one was shot yesterday with three lights. Could have done it with two I guess. http://felicityfatale.typepad.com/.a/6a01116836e... I suppose if you have carpet you might want to thrown something down on the floor. I think from B&Q you can get something like panel board which has a shiny side and is really cheap. Go look around the www.zarias.com website and find his white background tutorial for more info on that sort of thing.

What about really cheap, neutral coloured vinyl flooring to use as backdrop? “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act” - George Orwell |
