I don't like any form of censorship. But I agree with the above. Many so called humourists destroy any possibility of real debate on a thread with irrelevant or gratuitously hurtul remarks. I hope that no one who uses humour to make a relevant point or to support their argument (@bohnanza for example - who can be terse, cutting funny and relevant) will be affected. I think Admin has taken on a huge task that will be enormously difficult to do fairly. If it kills the humour here it will be horrid. If it removes cliched self-regarding one liners that are not big, not clever and rarely actually funny (if they were we'd be seeing IC quoted in Keith Chegwin's Twitter feed) then that's a good thing. Good move Admin. Excellent stuff. Proccie's point is well made: some see this stuff as serious, some don't (though I don't think that's strictly a difference between DS and SM). We *can* get along though, as the problem is not 'Goreans are this', or 'male subs are that', but that arseholes are arseholes, and they shouldn't be allowed to spoil other people's enjoyment of a conversation. The conversation in a pub analogy is good too. If a group wanted to sit and discuss human cows (to use Little Nik's excellent example), anyone who decided to sit nearby cracking stupid jokes and sniggering would be "invited to leave". By the way, with all the mention of jackboots and night-time raids have we ratified Godwin's Law yet? It's Admin's site; it isn't a democracy. Admin can do whatever Admin likes. Personally, I think the idea of democracy on a web forum is just silly, and I have witnessed the almost complete destruction of a friend's extremely successful web forum because he refused to abandon his anarchist principles and ban some troublemakers. Admin is absolutely right to be dictatorial.

I doubt IC will ever be empty... what is it that you want IC to represent? I come here to discuss issues which are relevant to BDSM yet of late you log in and the blogs/boards are just filled up which people who are talking about everything other than things which are far from BDSM specific. That might be the type of IC you're looking for but for some of us it most certainly isnt, so if by doing this Admin gets rid of a few twats (though i doubt it because twats like that usually need a ban) then good. ~* Raku wa ku no tané; ku wa raku no tané. *~

Sometimes a topic does get overheated, remember the spelling Nazis topics (a term I hate as I am an offspring of one of the children who escaped Hitler on a kintertrain in the late 30's, as far as I am aware none of the other members of the family got away and perished in the camps). However, when a topic gets overheated, when there are handbags at 50 paces, sometimes a comical comment takes the sting out of it. Some of the best comedy is heard at funerals.

Yeah. It's also incredibly HOT. I may have to wander off to find a site with an Uber Admin as if IC Admin is responding to feedback from users, this is a democracy and not a dictatorship .... rats! The above is an example of how to add humour while not detracting from the topic. Check out @Peccavi for 2727364365 more examples. Edited 12 Aug 10, 9:01 AM by Peccavi

It's a worthy and worthwhile aim, but unless the action is taken instantly, i.e. Admin is watching all the posts all of the time, it can't possibly work. Hiding a post after it has already hijacked a thread is pointless, and may well detract from the flow of subsequent discussion. Not all flippant remarks are entirely irrelevant. Flippancy is a useful tool for deflating the over-earnest. I'm glad I don't have to apply the 'wisdom of Solomon' to deciding which posts to hide. I think Admin is hoping that the request to tone it down will be respected, thereby negating 24/7 policing.

While I understand the concerns around things being censored, I do kinda agree with this step. Namely because the funny one liners very seldom seem to be funny. Aside from the very few funny things that slip through, at best they are an in-joke that only their friends even remotely get, at worst they just entirely waste a post. And it often just isn't one post, it becomes an entire back and forth about the comedy gold in question, de-railing the original post. But moreso, I really hope that it ends up cutting down on stuff like the first reply on a potentially controversial post being something like 'Grabs popcorn!!!!!! lol' - You know the post might cause an argument, the OP was quite likely aware, deliberate or not, so post something constructive, or don't post anything at all. No-one cares if you were 'clever' enough to anticipate strong words on a threat that is entitled 'Why don't any of you ungrateful fucks ever reply to my memos!'. And given the big YKIOK thing that's supposed to be prevalent on here, even if I have my own thoughts on it as an idea, it might even cut down on the 'Yawn, not this again' posts when things like Prostate Milking come up. No, I don't find it particularly interesting either, which is why I just click back on threads asking about it rather than adding my hilarious quip first. As has been pointed out, it's not like this kind of thing is allowed nowhere on the site now, and if anyone is really offended enough to leave the site because they can't post their drivel rather than saying anything remotely relevant then it's easy enough to delete a profile. I can't imagine that anyone actually will though, go figure! Phoenix When a man loves a woman it should be understood, |
