It takes a personal event to bring this out. Are you under 50, have you offered to donate? If not why not? You never know when you or yours may need help

I am on the Blood transfusion Service register. Have been on it now for about 10 years but as yet I have never been tissue matched. Just hope I can handle the actual procedure if I am called up, it's not the needle that scares me. It's how it gets the marrow out of the bone. Have also been told they might use both my legs as I have good blood in my veins and would probably like to get a large dose as quickly as possible. There is a fine line between sanity and insanity. I have a foot firmly planted either side of that line

It's because I like a cock up my ass that they wont let me in their special club! Though they're happy to let me have a donor card! Meddle Not In The Affairs Of Dragons For You Are Crunchy And Taste Good With Ketchup!

Sometimes offering to donate isn't enough. I'm not allowed to even donate blood. (I'm still fighting this now, and finally seem to be getting somewhere) Perhaps you can include a link for people, explain briefly what it involves etc. It was reading something like that which got me interested in the first place, and people shouldn't be put off by one poor experience of the service. You might double check about bone marrow donation, the rules are different from blood donation. I've been on the register for maybe 12 or 13 years through the Anthony Nolan trust but have never been even a possible match. "The unexamined life is not worth living" - Socrates

Thanks, I'll double check. I was told that I would be unsuitable candidate for both by the same person at a donor drive. They were the ones that gave me the donor card though!

I'm registered to be a donor when I die and my body is in usable condition. I would help my family if necessary, but I seem to recall that it isn't a very nice procedure at all so wouldn't do it unless really necessary. “During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act” - George Orwell

The register only needs a blood sample If you don't give that you cannot register. To give the bone marrow is not ideal but if you were a match you would literally save a life. The chance of a match is about the same as winning the lottery. Surely that gift would be worth a couple of days of minor hurt It's always the hangnails of life that drag you down

They won't take mine, I'm afraid, as I've received blood products in the past before they started screening blood for jacobcrutzfeldt's.

The British Bone Marrow Registry's website says you have to be a blood donor to donate bone marrow. |
