My Compaq Presario CQ70 has been more than adequate. I think they're a subsidiary of HP, or something like that.

(I had touble getting my HP printer to accept vista though, but thats another story).

Like Paddington, I like Ma'amalade.

I am a technotard :-) & moved over to a Mac book pro just over a month ago, & it is really easy & the training package to convert is fantastic.

I now know so much more about using programs than I ever did before with their training & as has been said, I doubt I will ever look back :-)

If its fair your after, best you go nilla :-*

I'd love to get into macs, but I had such a bad experience with the one that I've owned, I'm a bit dubious.

I bought one of the first macbooks (intel core) and within the first 18 months I'd had the harddrive, two logic boards and the CD drive replaced. Eeek!

However Macs are pricey as you are paying for all the software that comes with it,

I upgraded my elderly parents' PC at Christmas to a Mac Mini, and installed the free Open Office software for them. They had no problem making the change, and still rave about how much better the Mac is than their PC.

I've got 2 Dells, a Toshiba and an Acer.

They're all okay, really. Though my Inspiron overheated its keyboard so now i have a plug in keyboard, but that's okay because it's my "desktop" laptop. The Acer really doesn't like my T-Mobile dongle (but it's a work one so I rarely use it). The Toshiba has been sat in a drawer for ages and the other Dell is my "mini" one used for travelling when I only look at the internet on it, really.

If i were to buy a new one - dunno, really. I'd be looking for the best deal for my money, I suppose. You get a good one or a bad one, in my mind it doesn't depend on the brand itself.

I should change my username to Octopus, shouldn't I?

Brief explanation: had a laptop. Set up my own company so bought a better one (that matched my company's logo colours, natch), and put the original one in a drawer. The company I left never claimed back their laptop, so that's my travelling one... and when working for myself didn't pan out I joined another company, to whom the Acer actually belongs. (And the iphone). I'm not really that multi-tasking!

I find with any tech, it's mostly pot luck. Run a Google search for "Acer/Apple/HP/Dell/Sony laptops are useless" and you'll find stories from folk who've had no end of problems with said brand.

Whatever he goes for, I'd recommend taking a look at what help the shop/supplier provides for when things go wrong and other people's experiences of how helpful their customer services are.

Dell, for example, are the worst I've ever had the misfortune of coming across. I'm sure they're still trying to figure out an arse from an elbow and which way is up.

I think your 1st para is right - possibly the exception of Acer, who seem to be a major fail in the view of everyone I knew who bought one. The problem is that models come out so frequently that a glitch in a product is economically unfixable for its six month shelf life. I tend to buy on the basis of how much I like the keyboard and how well it does HD video.

I've never had a problem with Dells, and I've had shit loads, and thrown them at concrete floors (though pouring OJ into one did the trick).

My current Sony is nice, but a DIMM died after 4 months. The DIMM however is one of the best brands on the market, so....

As far as support and hardware, Apple are probably top of the class right now. However, they're costly, and if he wants to run Windows he'll need to buy a separate license.

As far as the normal OEM brands are concerned, I'd go for HP, Lenovo, Toshiba or Fujitsu (probably in that order of preference). Lenovo (Thinkpads) are built like tanks and are great laptops, but not the lightest -- very reliable on the whole. HP laptops are excellent for both looks, weight and reliability, IMO.
