I am the proud possessor of an exquisite cat o' nine tails that I bought in a Persian bazaar from a one-eyed mulatto who told me a curious tale. It had originally been owned by an ex-Royal Navy captain in the 1780s who was hanged at Port Royal for piracy. It then passed into the hands of Sulieman the Seventeenth (known to history as “The Magnificent”) in Constantinople and was used by the chief eunoch of his seraglio to quell unnatural vices amongst the wives. It then passed into the hands of Sir Richard Burton, the antiquarian, anthropologist and translator of The Thousand and One Nights and was, if the rumours are to be believed, used by him on his mistress, Lady Caroline Lamb. From Burton's hands it was lost for some years before re-surfacing in the Souk in Cairo where I paid a king's ransom to possess it.

I call it Nobby.
