I was at the Manchester Dungeon party on Friday (ace night)and I noticed a gentleman with a physical disability.
And it occured to me that apart from him, myself and 2 others, that I don't really know any one else on the NW scene that is disabled.
Then thinking in general I realised I don't know any colourd or Asian ppl on the scene either.
So I realised that the NW scene is dominated by caucasian British ppl who aren't disabled.
Why is it mainly caucasian ppl?
Why is it rare to see a disabled person on scene?
Is it the same in other areas of the country?
Those of you know me know I am not rascist and that I am scientifically trained.
So, what are your thoughts on these observations?
Answers on a post card to the usual address.

If it's the same guy who goes to the kage I spoke to him on Sunday and poured him a couple of drinks but it did highlight that we don't cater for those with disabilities and I'll admit how crap I am with people who have physical disabilites. Another one bites the dust.

There are a number of people who have disabilities on the NW scene, some of them usually use a wheel chair but make a huge effort when out socialising. I have also met people who are senosry impaired. I also know a few none-caucasions although the ratio compared with the general population is low.

Do you only class disabled people as wheelchair users? I know loads of people, including myself, who have disabilities that aren't obvious to the naked eye.
I know lots of people of different ethnic backgrounds. In the past year I've dated Black, White, Asian men - hell I'm even dating a bloody Cardifian! That said, you're meeting a sample of a population, and that is nearly always going to end up not giving you a full picture of the population - for example, the one that surprises me is the lack of gay men I've met on the scene. Oi, Brat! If you were replying to me - no, ofcourse not but I'm not going to start listing things that I have learned from people in confidence, suffice to say, there are plenty although I will admit I have answered purely in regard to physical disability and steered clear of the psychological debate.

It's one reason we need to do our best to find disabled-friendly venues as we don't know who may wish to attend or how much of a struggle a regular may find steps.

It isn't just BDSM which is mostly white and able bodied. Science Fiction conventions and bridge clubs and even the crowd at Glastonbury has had the same bleach rinse. It has nothing to do with any inherent racism or anti disabled practices, it just works out that way. There are plenty of activities which are too black and too disabled when compared to the general population. Technically I am disabled. I have Prosopagnosia and no 3D vision, yet it doesn't hinder me and you cannot tell by looking at me. Why don't cash machines have a Gamble button?

As a person with one or two disabilities myself not really found any difficulties and always someone around to help if I need it. Thought about hanging up my spurs at one time, cant keep my balance and have no binocular vision (makes aiming floggers etc difficult but not impossible). Then realising that as I need to carry and sometimes use a walking stick that it could be adapted into a portable leg stretcher, then if I can adapt that, other portable aids could be made.
Please if you're in my neck of the woods please don't approach all gentlemen who carry a stick with a white stripe pattern with "How're you doing you old kinkster" it might not be me. B Second childhood? Me? I haven't left the first one yet! |
