Any Kinky Klimbers out there for Dove Dale? (34)

Prior and I (merrynb99) have been chatting away quietly about getting together for another walk/walking weekend.

One of places I've been keen to walk is Dovedale, and we have set a date for the two of us to walk it on Sunday 12 September. Would anyone else like to join us?

As Prior says:

"It's undoubtedly picnic and paddling territory, but it's none the less pretty for that, and we aren't going in the school holiday. It seems commonplace to describe the area in general as Dove Dale but I've always considered it to be the Dale itself. So I think that the first (very easy) objective is to walk the Dale itself. It's just 3 miles and there's plenty see: caves, cliffs, stepping stones etc. There's car parking, toilets, refreshments at each end so it's all very civilised.

Having done that, there's the choice of going back the same way or walking up along the tops and/or through the woods.

If we got away for 10.00am we'd easily manage that by lunchtime and then there's still the afternoon.

It's an easy drive up there, by the way, from London. M1 to J24A to join the A50 which is all dual-carriageway now. Then it's about 10 miles to Ashbourne. I noticed a milestone in Ashbourne that said 136 miles to London.

There are loads of B&Bs in the area (Google Ashbourne and Fenny Bentley) so anyone coming can fix up their own. There's also lots of camping in the vicinity."

Sept 12th, meet at Milldale car park (free) 9.45 for departure 10.00am. Walk Dove Dale & environs, 8-10 miles.

I feel faint! You bastards! What do you mean this isn't Scafell Pike!! Which way is North!?

Sounds interesting. I like hiking, but everybody I know are lazy bastards so I never have anyone to go with.

After a while, trudging across the top of Kinder Scout can get a bit boring on your own ^_^

Soz, there's no way I'd do an 280 mile round car trip, lasting about 6 hours, just to do a walk of less than that time. It's way too expensive, and that would mean taking a whole day just to go for a relatively short walk. We are blessed with an aboslute ton of interesting walks, views et al, within a 30 mile radius!

I realise not everybody on IC is Lunnun-ish, but most of the KK are, and hope that if we're to walk again this winter, most of the walks are within reasonable travelling distance :)

MissP, I'm with you here. If it's a few days holiday which happens to include a KK walk that's fine but for me it's far too far for a day trip and not worth it for an overnight.

Even further for me as I'm from south of London, so, lovely as I'm sure it is, a little bit too far.

While in the vicinity, it might be worth trying to fit in a visit to Thor's cave in the Manifold valley in your walk. Rather wonderful and totally unique. E.g. see http://www.walkingenglishman.com/peakdistrict06.... or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFcKEjPA_v8&featu...

Hope you have a great day.

I was going to come along with Angelish as we've been keen to join in with the Kinky Klimbers.

Unfortunately that weekend clashes with the London to Brighton bike ride and the bike gets the priority :-)

I would like to join you, not far for me to get to. Would it be ok to bring my dog along?
