We went out for a picnic today. Our niece and her boyfriend were up visiting mum and given the prospects of good weather we all agreed to get together and have some fun.
All went well until we started on our way to the picnic site, a local forestry area that has a lovely little cafe and RSPB shop and loads and loads of forest walks for the more energetic amongst us.
Our way unfortunately was blocked by a police car shutting off the road, so rather than head back home i did my utmost to find an alternative route to the site.
If i had been thinking straight i would have realised that there was a good reason for blocking off the road, but no i was so intent on finding another way it never occurred to me. Until of course we came upon the reason.
Another police car across the road, ambulance and fire service in attendance and to cap it all the air ambulance taking off.
We sat in the queue for a while until the police came and told us all to turn around as the road was staying shut for quite a while.
So another detour, a long long detour, a trip that normally takes 15 mins took over an hour. However i would much rather that trip than the one that the poor devil in the helicopter faced.
We all had a wonderful afternoon, brilliant company and great to catch up.
i couldnt help but think on the way home though that all the cars that overtook me and took so many chances might not have been so stupid if they had witnessed what we had on the way to the picnic site.
My hopes are that the emergency services managed to save those poor souls in the two cars, and that they will recover soon.
Its certainly a sobering thought for the next time i get behind the wheel.
