I think I've learned to spot birch trees, but I can be extra sure now by comparing them to your pictures of the leaves. Looks wonderful!and fun! i tried something similar but didn't use any anvil secateurs i used a pen knife. This looks like a more effective way and a lot cleaner than my attempts! noted for next time. Life is for living why wait for the storm to ride out when you can learn to dance in the rain!!! | |

Hello all -- This is a truly fascinating thread. For some reason I haven't been spending much time on IC, but am on TSR almost daily. I think I should come here more often if the quality of this thread is indicative of the board as a whole. Anyway, I just wanted to endorse all the remarks that people have been making about birching here. I have not been on the receiving end myself, but have given birchings and viewed even more. I and some friends run a little 'slave establishment' (for willing volunteers), where we divide ourselves up in to slaves and free people. We are all sane, the 'slavery' is naturally consensual, but we do take what we do *very* seriously, and people do stay in role while on the property. Anyway, this is all rather a long-winded way of building up to telling you that we had a public birching here this weekend. The birchee (is there such a word?) was a fit 20-year-old guy being birched for disobedience and laziness. He was given twelve strokes and was left with a backside covered in tiny welts from the twigs in the rod. Looked lovely (to me!) and I suspect it will have served as a justly painful reminder for this 'slave' to obey its mistress in furture. I do have a couple of questions. What was the average number of strokes someone might receive at a judicial birching? And was this punishment reserved for just males or were females subject to it too? All the best to everyone. The birch is a very effective form of punishment. As a switch I know how it feels and have given many birchings. The feelings are very different from that of a cane but after 18 strokes and stood in the corner hands on head, you know you have been punished. | |

A birchrod is the one thing that guarantees my good behaviour. I've only had it twice and that was more than enough if it's applied properlly (note to all, NEVER wear a kilt in close proximity to a birch rod  )Mind you, reading the posts I think someone should organise a scavanger hunt of sorts, people could post pics of subs collecting their own cuttings and the one from the most unuaual place wins (or some such :P ) I didn't do it, nobody saw me amd you can't prove a thing! Hazel is particularly easy to recognise at this time of the year... it's covered in hazelnuts
